In a tennis warm up, the goal is to loosen up the muscles in preparation for physical exercise. Warm up exercises for tennis begin slow, allowing a player to gradually tune in with his or her game until the player is completely warmed up.

If you don’t warm up properly before doing any physical activity, especially a vigorous one like playing tennis, you will end up suffering from injuries or unable to perform at your best.

Your timing and rhythm will be off and your movements sluggish and uncoordinated. This will also affect your strokes leading to breakdowns in technique.

When you watch tennis on TV, you see the athletes come into the court and then do around 20 minutes of hitting before the actual match starts. What you didn’t see was that the players had already warmed up before heading out to the court.

In your case, if you have participated in a tournament at a local club or league, you usually have less than 20 minutes. Sometimes, only 5 minutes are allocated as warm up time. This makes it even more important for you to prepare ahead of time. You should do warm up exercises for tennis about 30 minutes before you head to the court so that once there, the 5 minute warm up rally will be sufficient.

Basic Tennis Warm up Exercises

The first set of your warm up exercises for tennis can be a simple trunk twisting exercise. Hold your racket in front with one hand on the handle and the other at the tip of the head and then simply twist your trunk from side to side, being careful not to over exert.

Next, you can do arm circles to loosen up the shoulders. Start with doing 10 small circles forward and 10 backward. Follow this up with medium circles and finally, big circles where you try to use almost the full range of motion of the joint.

You can continue your warm up with a light jog around the court. Follow this up with a few quick side skipping jogs left and right along the one of the lines of the court. This gets your muscles used to the lateral movement that is greatly required in tennis. Your next warm up exercise for tennis should be a high knee jog in order to stretch your hamstrings.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #1: Slow Jog

You start at the baseline and jog to the net kicking your knees high with every step. Then, you do the same kind of jog backward back to the baseline. After this, do butt kick jogs where you try to touch your buttocks with your feet as you jog in place.

This stretches the quadriceps. Additionally, you can also do high-step trunk rotations. To do this, place your fists in front of your chest with your elbows out to the sides. Raise your knees to the chest on the opposite side, twisting your trunk back and forth as you do this exercise.

You can be flexible with your warm up exercises for tennis. Some of your tennis footwork drills can be used as part of your warm up in place of a regular jog or side skipping jog. The following are examples of such exercises:

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #2:

Carioca step – this is a sideward moving run where you move at constant speed. To move to the right, your left foot alternately cross in front and behind your right foot. To move to the left, reverse the steps.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #3:

Wedel – this is a diagonal hopping drill where you hop with both feet together forward to the left and then forward to the right, and repeating the pattern.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #4:

Baby Bounds – keep on the balls of your feet as you run forward using big steps while keeping the legs body width apart.

If you will be playing on a clay court where you need to slide into your shots, incorporate a few sliding drills as part of your warm up exercises for tennis. These include the following:

Angle slides

– slide at a 45 degree angle to the right and then to the left.

Sprint and slide

– sprint diagonally to the right for about 3-5 steps and slide, and then do the same diagonally in the opposite direction.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #5: Basic Stretches

Warm up exercises for tennis should also include stretches for the lower back. You can simply sit down on the ground with your legs extended and try to touch your toes. First, just touch your toes straight forward, then spread your legs and try to touch the left toe with your right hand and your right toe with your left hand.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis #6: Mini Tennis

After all of these exercises, you are now ready for some light hitting. Gradually, you can progress to hitting the ball harder. However, the first few hits should be made from inside the service line. Hit some soft ground strokes, volleys and half volleys to get your reflexes up and ready. After about 5 minutes, move to the service line where you continue your rally. Move back further to no-man’s land and finally to the baseline. Once you are at the baseline, try to keep your ground strokes as deep as possible. It is better to hit long than into the net during this warm up. Try different spins and trajectories but always focus on keeping proper form. After about 10 minutes of ground strokes, move back to the net where you practice your volleys and overheads.

Warm up Exercises for Tennis: Practice Serves

This time, your warm up partner will be at the baseline so you will now be trying to volley balls that are struck harder than in the first part of the warm up when both of you were inside the service line. Finally, finish off your warm up with some practice serves, both to the deuce court and to the ad court. Do this for about 5 minutes.

Once again, do not be too rigid with your hitting warm up routine. If you feel like you need more serving practice, take more time to do so. But keep in mind that you have to be at your match on time, so you may need to reduce your time warming up the other strokes.

Cool Down Exercises after the Tennis Warm Up

You should be finished with your warm up exercises for tennis around 10-15 minutes before your actual match. Try to cool down a little during this period. Change your shirt, take a drink, eat a banana or an energy bar and assess overall how you are feeling physically. If you feel any little aches and pains, you might need to put on some kind of support or have the affected joint taped.

Sometimes, you do not have time or access to an available court to hit before going to your match. In that case, you can add some shadow swings to your warm up exercises. For example, as you side skip laterally, you can mimic hitting a forehand or backhand.

As you sprint forward and backward, you can shadow swing a volley or an overhead. Once you do get to the court for your match, use the warm up time wisely, especially if only 5 minutes are allocated.

The Mental Tennis Warm Up Preparation

The last thing to remember about your warm up exercises for tennis is that aside from getting you physically ready for your match, you should also be getting your mind in shape to play. Use your warm up to get your mind thinking that it is ready to do battle on the court. Keep thinking positively and visualize you moving and hitting well.

For example, if you are doing your side skipping jog, visualize being able to cover the court and getting to every ball. If you are doing shadow swings, visualize hitting the ball well and putting your opponent in trouble with your shots. You can Use the 10-15 minutes between your last warm up exercise and your actual match to think about strategy and tactics.

Proper Tennis Match Warm Up & Preparation

When you get to the court and start hitting against your opponent, try to assess how he is as a player. Ideally, you should have scouted him out already, but it is still a different thing when you start playing.

If you warm up properly for your matches, you can take charge from the first point onward. If you have to spend the first few games finding your way, you might find yourself behind in the score already and you wouldn’t want to give any kind of advantage to your opponent right away, would you?

While technique, strokes and tennis strategies are an essential part of the game, mental tennis is often the hardest battle inside the human mind. Mental tennis is mostly a battle of our own mind, and players have the choice to condition the mind properly to enhance their technical and physical skills on court when it comes to match play.

Mental Tennis Foundation

Tennis Training relates to the factors associated of mental, physical and technical training. These three main areas of tennis are needed to develop a champion tennis player. In tennis, if one wants to be a tennis champion, then the player must follow the necessary product of tennis training, good coaching and inborn abilities along with the other basic skills like physical, mental, and emotional skills to gain confidence to win the match.

Mental Tennis Training

The mental tennis training is seldom recognized, but one of the most powerful tools needed to succeed in the game of tennis. Mental tennis is the game that plays inside your mind and it can either be used as a great leverage or it can be a liability if not properly trained.

The mental part of the game is a key area of any successful tennis training program. At top junior tennis academies around the world, specific parts of the day is dedicated to mental tennis training. Here, promising young junior players learn about the factors that effect the mind that can either cause them to lose or win a tennis match. Their tennis training program discusses factors such as confidence, key points of the match, visualization, positive self-talk and mental preparation before, during and after the match are just a few examples.

The player should also have mental skills like concentration which plays the key role in tennis. Players must develop control over his or her emotions and thoughts. The player should have full concentration while playing the game while maintaining a positive mood and a “never give up policy” along with courage and self confidence, and motivation.

As in any other part of life, tennis training plays an important role in success. The key to success is adequate preparation. The mental tennis preparation often begins even before the actual tennis match has begun. Players must choose to become a master of their mind or let their mind control them, costing them to lose tennis matches.

Physical Tennis Training

The physical aspect of tennis training has become more popular in modern tennis as the awareness for the need of becoming more fit to gain an advantage in this high paced game. Any elite tennis training program will include a tennis fitness regimen. Today, tennis requires explosiveness, quickness and endurance to be successful at the competitive level. Players are now incorporating fitness training into their tennis training program.

When we talk about the physical tennis training, the player must develop speed, stamina and show their reactions through their racket, coordination and dynamic balance between the body, ball and the racket.

The key of physical tennis training is achieving peak performance.

The physical part of tennis training includes everything from cardiovascular exercises, to weight training for tennis to speed and agility drills. The goal here is to speed up reaction time, while gaining a head start to the tennis ball keeping players ahead of schedule during a rally. Every successful physical training element will include a detailed and specific tennis training program that is designed for the individual player. This is why we see elite tennis players with personalized tennis training coaches helping to design their fitness regimen.

Technical Tennis Training

The technical part of tennis is an essential part of any tennis training program. This relates to the technique, stroke mechanics and strategy of tennis. At top tennis academies in the world, players spend several hours a day performing tennis drills and refining stroke mechanics. The reason for this is planning. Players understand that in order to be successful in matches, they must practice the way they want to play. Often times, elite tennis players have full time coaches that are responsible for their technical development as a player.

The fact is that technique, strategy and stroke mechanics are the backbone of every great tennis player. Without a strong technical foundation, players will lack the execution necessary to improve their tennis.

Tennis is considered to be a sport that is dependent on its proper technique. Incorrect technique will not only hamper the player’s game, but it will leave the player at a risk of injuries and long-term muscle damage. The first priority is to balance practice with competitive match play and master the techniques before he or she puts them into practice. The players must select a coach that is very much involved in coaching the players.

In order to possess the technical skills, the player must develop a solid foundation on the forehand, backhand, serve, volley, overhead and return. Then the player should have an understanding in applying the tennis strategy and know how to play offense and defense.

The player should know how to play against the different types of opponents like for example aggressive players, baseliners, net rushers and left handers. Not only that, the player should know how to deal with different shots and how to apply it.

Keys of World Class Tennis Training

In order for a player to engage in the best tennis training, they must be willing to step outside of their comfort zone. This often means making changes to correct bad habits in the technique and tennis strokes. The technical aspect of tennis is usually a learning process.

The secret to success for any tennis player undergoing tennis training is developing a individualized plan to go from location A to location B. The reason why goals must be carefully charted is to keep the player on the correct course. A tennis training program sets the benchmarks for the player to follow and offers a clear guideline as to the progress the player has made.

A tennis player is more inclined to follow a carefully planned tennis training program because it solidifies the need to achieve. For tennis players that don’t have the luxury of guidance from an elite tennis training program, they must work to develop their own personalized program based on their individual needs.

Tennis is a type of sport that needs a lot of skills and techniques. To be on top, a tennis player needs to possess the technical, physical, and mental skills and techniques. A diversified set of tennis skills and techniques are needed if a tennis player desires to improve in tennis.

Players must possess a wide range of different tennis skills and techniques, which includes stroke production, strategy, mental toughness, and physical athleticism. Some these tennis skills and techniques are discussed here.

Fundamental Tennis Skills and Techniques

Below are the fundamental tennis technical skills that every beginner player should acquire. Additional skills are acquired as players mature and become more knowledgeable of the more advanced technical skills. Examples of these advanced skills are net play, net charge, making contact, slice, drop shots, swing and many others. Only the fundamental tennis skills and techniques are described here.

Tennis Forehand Tennis Skills and Techniques

The tennis forehand stroke is the number one part of tennis skills and techniques for many players from beginner to professional tennis players. The forehand stroke is considered as the most natural stroke in tennis.

If you are a right-handed player, and your opponent returns a ball directly towards your body, your tendency is to step to your left and hit the ball from the right side of your body. If you are a left-handed player, and your opponent returns a point directly towards your body, you naturally step to you right side and hit the ball from the left side of your body. Because the forehand stroke is a sort of s natural stroke, this stroke is performed more by players in tennis matches compared to the other tennis strokes.

Tennis Backhand Tennis Skills and Techniques

The backhand stroke is executed from the opposite side of your forehand stroke. Thus, if you are a right-handed player, you hit the ball from the left side of your body. If you are a left-handed player, you hit the ball from the right side of your body.

To correctly execute the backhand stroke, you must bring back you dominant hand or racket hand around your body before you hit the ball.

The tennis backhand stroke can be awkward to execute in the beginning. But if you are diligent to familiarize and practice it regularly, it can be a very good additional tool for you tennis skills and techniques.

Tennis Serve Tennis Skills and Techniques

The tennis serve is the beginning of a point in a tennis game. The player who serves is called the server and the player on the other end is the receiver. There are several types of serves such as topspin, topspin-slice, flat, slice, kick and many others.

Since the serve begins every point, it’s crucial to develop this among other tennis skills and techniques.

A perfect serve is achieved by executing the right stance, the right tennis serve grip and the correct ball toss. In addition, power can also be added if the server has the ability to execute the proper body movements (knee bending and body coiling), the right racket swing and the right point of contact. Most importantly, the serve must be developed as a primary weapon while achieving pinpoint accuracy and depth.

Tennis Lob

A tennis lob shot is an important additional asset to add to a player’s tennis skills and techniques. It is a shot that can be used as an offensive or defensive shot. A lob shot is executed by hitting the ball high and deep into your opponent’s court. Normally, an offensive lob shot is hit when the opponent is at the net. Whilst the defensive lob shot is used to force the opponent back and allow you to recover to a better defensive position. As a result, you can gain back the control of the play and make it to your advantage.

Tennis Overhead

A tennis overhead is a shot hit above the player’s head just like the serve execution. It is also called as a smash shot as it is usually hit with power. If executed correctly, it gives a point to the smasher. If a lob shot is normally hit down deep, an overhead shot is normally hit near the net or in the middle of the court. In some cases, a poorly executed lob shot (not very high and not to deep) can be returned as an overhead shot by the opponent. To give more power to an overhead shot, hit it before it bounces on the ground. A lob shot is another addition to the player’s tennis skills and techniques that ensures a point.

Tennis Volley

A tennis volley is a shot where the ball is hit before it bounces on the ground except for the overhead shot and the serve. In most cases, a tennis volley is hit when you are playing net. However, it can also be done even if you are in the middle or even on the baseline depending on the circumstances.

A volley is considered as part of the overall tennis skills and techniques that can be applied when you are off balance or out-of-position to hit a groundstroke. However, it is normally played as an offensive shot near the net, where you hit a winner angled or a well placed volley shot.

Physical Tennis Skills and Techniques

General athletic ability

The game of tennis involves a lot of physical activities. It needs speed, agility, endurance, and flexibility that any players to want to reach the top must have. These are among tennis skills and techniques needed to be a successful player.

You need speed to run for a ball as quickly as possible and you need agility and alertness to anticipate your opponent’s shot.

Your muscles and tendons needs to be flexible for you to be able to hit balls that seem unreachable. Lastly, you need to have the endurance to last long hours of tennis matches.

Balance

Balance is one of the very important physical tennis skills and techniques a player must have. Balance is vital to hit well placed and accurate shots. Good balance also minimizes injuries especially in the lower part of the body such as the legs, ankles and knees. Exercises and drills to improve balance can be done both on court and off-court (e.g. gym).

Hand-Eye-Coordination

Tennis is a sport where hand-eye coordination is important so that your hand and the other parts of your body quickly react to do the right moves in response of what your eyes see. Hand eye coordination is one of many tennis skills and techniques that are very important especially for advanced tennis where the nature of the game is very quick and fast. Although this skill is believed to develop through years of playing tennis, drills to develop this skill is still necessary especially for young beginners.

Mental Tennis Skills and Techniques

Motivation

Without motivation, tennis skills and techniques are of little use. Having the motivation to accomplish something is the recipe of many successful individuals in their own fields. The same is true for tennis players. Young beginners have to have motivation to learn the different tennis skills and tactics for them to succeed and improve. Professional players on one hand, must be motivated enough to win difficult matches.

Concentration

Concentration and focus play a vital role in every tennis player’s performance. To have focus while you are on court means you have to eliminate all the other thoughts especially the negative ones that can distract you. Concentration is necessary to let your first serve in especially during crucial points or you need to focus not to miss your second serve to avoid double faults.

Concentration is not only important on court but off court as well such as during practice. You need to have a full concentration for you to improve your tennis skills and techniques during regular practice.

Competitive spirit

Tennis is a tough game particularly for tennis singles. It can become tougher if the match is not going your way because you are alone out there on court. Your competitive spirit is tested when you are racing against the leading opponent. The way you handle the situation when you are losing will be determined on your competitive ability. A competitive player does not give up until the winner is declared.

Problem-solving

In tennis, a player must develop a game plan whoever his/her opponent will be. However, a game plan does not always work. Unlike basketball where a coach can ask for a time out to change his game plan if the first one is not working, a tennis player needs to come up with his own solutions in case his tactics are effective. He has to find ways to stop the opponent’s momentum for him not to be out played.

An advanced tennis player must possess tennis skills to be a successful in the game of tennis. At the professional level, players at the top of the rankings possess physical, mental and emotional tennis skills.

The upside is that even recreational and club players can learn the recipes and tennis skills needed to succeed in tennis.

Physical Tennis Skills

Let’s discuss physical tennis skills. Firstly, flexibility, balance, aerobic health, and strength are all required in order to garner the best results from your tennis skills; that is, you need to work on all four areas to be physically fit for successful tennis.

How to achieve fitness in each area? Remember, it’s best to get fit to play tennis, not play tennis to get fit, so most of your workouts will occur off the court.

For flexibility, try practicing yoga. Yoga poses stretch not only the muscles, but the joints as well — and, a sequence of yoga poses will stretch the entire body, necessary for enhanced physical tennis skills. A body which is rigid at the beginning of learning yoga may become quite flexible, even those parts which have not been consciously worked upon.

For balance (essential for agility), consider the ancient art of T’ai Chi; studies have proven the association of T’ai Chi practice with significant improvement in balance which is a requisite for improved physical tennis skills. Your local fitness or recreation center may offer a class. (T’ai Chi’s gentle flowing movements also reduce stress.)

Aerobic Fitness for tennis

For aerobic fitness, consider the following. The benefits of aerobic exercise are many: strengthening the muscles involved in respiration, thus, facilitating the flow of air in and out of the lungs; strengthening the heart muscle, thus, improving its pumping efficiency; and, strengthening muscles throughout the entire body. Solid aerobic endurance sustains a player’s tennis skills for the duration of a game, which may last several hours.

For aerobic health, no one exercise is best for everyone. But it is always necessary to use large muscle groups repetitively for a sustained amount of time; and it is best to perform the exercise for 60 minutes, preferably five days a week.

The intensity of your aerobic workout can be determined by your heart rate. Use the following formula to ensure your exercise is helping you achieve aerobic fitness: subtract your age from 220, and multiply the resulting number by 60%, or .6, and by 90%, or .9. The resultant numbers represent the optimal low end and high-end heart rates you should maintain while exercising.

For instance, if you are thirty years old, your optimal low-end heart rate would be 114 and your optimal high-end heart rate would be 171. Choose an exercise you enjoy; swimming, running, and cycling are excellent forms of aerobic exercise. At the gym, ski machines, stair climbers, steppers, and ellipticals can all offer an aerobic workout.

And, finally, strength training augments your tennis skills; whether you want a stronger serve, groundstroke, volley, or overhead smash, building a stronger body is key. Tennis specific weight training will not only improves your tennis skills, it will help ward off injuries. But, strength training to enhance tennis skills must be very sport specific; you must find the appropriate amount of muscle mass for power — too much bulkiness slows down court speed. Working with greater repetitions and lower weights maintains agility and speed while appropriately increasing strength.

Mental Tennis Skills

Now, let’s discuss mental tennis skills. You may have dominant physical tennis skills — you may be more flexible, more balanced, aerobically more fit, and stronger than your opponent, but without mental tennis skills, you will likely lose to the physically weaker player with more advanced mental tennis skills. That is, no matter how skilled and fit you are, if you break down in significant matches and close calls, you will lose.

Mental tennis skills will prepare you for close matches and enhance your strokes — in essence, it will give you that all important edge.

Even over opponents with superior physical tennis skills, merely by the power of your mind. Mental tennis skills are crucial to the success of your game.

The techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy, a type of psychotherapy developed by American psychiatrist, Aaron Beck, may be used to develop mental tennis skills. Cognitive-behavioral therapy challenges negative self-talk and provides more balanced reality-tested alternatives.

For instance, a technique in cognitive therapy termed cognitive rehearsal can be applied to great effect. Imagine a situation during a recent game in which you did not succeed. Consider what difference(s) in your game would have helped you succeed.

Visualization in Tennis Psychology

Then in a relaxed setting, imagine over and over again the situation playing out in that successful manner. When you are confronted with a similar situation again, the imagined, or rehearsed, behavior will be automatically drawn upon; you will play successfully. Statistically, it’s been proven that those who visualize the end they hope to achieve are twice as likely to succeed as those who do not.

Other techniques, which originated in Buddhism, improve mindfulness and can help you ‘let thoughts’ be, and dissociate yourself from sensory input which is a distraction from achieving optimal physical tennis skills. Other cognitive-behavioral techniques will also help you improve your concentration on set goals, your mind-set and mental attitude, your self-control and self-discipline, your ability to recuperate after training, your self-esteem and self-belief, your stamina in training, and your self-understanding and self-awareness.

Breathing Exercises

Specific breathing techniques are also useful mental tennis skills taught through cognitive-behavioral therapy. Proper breathing allows you to practice moving between the left and right hemispheres of the brain; thus, shifting from the low arousal, goal within goal thinking associated with the left brain hemisphere to the high arousal, and more process orientated ‘take it as it comes’ attitude associated with the right brain hemisphere. Breathing techniques therefore can help you demonstrate your best physical tennis skill, remaining in the moment, without the need to reflect, analyze, or assess performance until after the game.

Check your local bookstore or library for books offering training in cognitive-behavioral therapy. Then practice the techniques. Once mastered, you will find yourself single-minded and present-focused in your game, demonstrating the most effective delivery of your physical tennis skills.

Emotional Tennis Skills

And, finally, let’s discuss emotional tennis skills. Certain emotions, in particular, those involving anxiety, can diminish even the best of physical tennis skills. Emotions frequently contribute to players losing to inferior opponents. Why? Tennis is inherently antagonistic, hence emotional, since each players use their tennis skills to combat his or her opponent.

Emotions on the tennis court

Threat and intimidation may play significant roles in tennis; it is a far more emotional game than it may appear to the observer. Closely contested matches become stressful — winning them is emotionally significant and uplifting, and losing them is emotionally painful. No matter how much you hone your physical and mental tennis skills, emotions will likely effect your game if not controlled. But, emotional tennis skills can be learned just as certainly as physical and mental tennis skills. And emotional strength contributes to success on the court.

The goal of emotional tennis skills is the ability to have a positive response in a negative situation and when feeling negative emotions. Whereas mental tennis skills involve positive thinking and good concentration under stress, emotional tennis skills involves positive feelings such as low anxiety, good motivation, calmness, courage, optimism, happiness, and confidence.

Emotional tennis skills allow you to consistently access empowering emotions during a match. Similar to developing mental tennis skills, but with variations, developing emotional tennis skills requires that you use controlled breathing, centering, and cognitive restructuring — and, that you transfer emotional tennis skills to games using visualization, imagery, and simulation.

In other words, the thoughts and images you have in your mind have emotional consequences; undisciplined thoughts and images will negatively affect your play. And you need to practice emotional responses. You won’t have a new emotional response to a difficulty on the court if you haven’t practiced emotional responses off the court. Just like muscles, emotional tennis skills need time and stimulation to grow. And, interestingly, when and what you eat and the quantity and quality of your sleep and rest can effect your emotional tennis fitness as well.

So, to be a top-notch player, or just to improve your game, practice physical tennis skills, mental tennis skills, and emotional tennis skills off the court; you’ll soon see the results on the court.

Hopefully, through the tennis instruction presented on this website, you may be able to cleanse yourself of the biggest tennis myth that is not only detrimental to your tennis game, but also preventing you from improving your tennis.

Many of these tennis myths are so widespread, that they had made themselves into mainstream tennis instruction. You’ve probably heard of some of these, but I’d like to define the facts versus the opinions.

Most tennis myths are passed down from one person to another. A lot of tennis myths originate due to the limitations of the human eye. A human eye can only observe a certain tennis movement (tennis stroke) at around 30 frames per second or less, whereas a high speed camera can capture a tennis movement in much greater frames per second. The result is, the human eye misses alot of key movements within the movement or tennis stroke.

Most tennis instruction is based on observation, but because the human eyes only sees speeds up to 30fps, the end result was traditional instruction was based on the human eyes of others. In the past, tennis instruction was relied upon by the naked eye of the observer, who would then pass on the perception that he or she had about a certain tennis technique.

With the invent of recent technology, high speed cameras are now able to see a tennis stroke in much clearer detail; and when slowed down, alot of tennis myths of the past can be proven false.

Most tennis myths are passed down from tennis coach to student, and doesn’t change.

The game of tennis is constantly evolving. From one era to another, the top champions of the game have different looking strokes and even different game styles. The problem with most tennis instruction taught to club tennis and recreational players is that it doesn’t evolve with the game. Most traditional tennis instruction is outdated and based on what players use to do in the past, rather than the present.

Tennis Myth #1 Always move forward and step in when hitting your forehand and backhand

Now here is an interesting tennis myth that is widespread in the tennis community. You’ll often hear teaching pros teach this to their students (mostly derived of club tennis players). You’ll read about this in tennis books, tennis magazines, online tennis discussion communities and message boards and even from TV media tennis commentators.

Let’s examine this more carefully. Though it’s ideal to be on the “attacking mode” and being able to step into ball implies the ability to be on the “offence” rather than the “defence”, it is not always possible nor ideal to step into every shot and move forward.

The reality is, top tennis professionals learn to play “offence” and also adept in “defence.” Different situations warrant different footwork – meaning that it’s physically impossible to always be moving forward on every tennis shot.

This instruction implies that there is only one direction you should always move, and that’s forward. But it’s incorrect because top pros learn to move in all different directions. Forward, backward, sideways, sideways and back, sideways and forward, etc… Trying to build your game around only moving forward is impossible.

You can’t always move forward and step in.

Imagine trying to force yourself to move forward on every ball – how unnatural it will be. Doing so can vastly throw off your timing and cause tennis to become a much more complicated game than it needs to be.

Did you know that the majority of the time, pros move “backwards” rather than forwards? In other words, pros spend most of their time stepping back, rather than stepping in.

Tennis Myth #2 You should take your racket back right away

Everyone who has taken tennis lessons before have heard this one. The idea of this tennis myth is to take your racket back fast, and the faster the better. This commonly taught advice encourages a tennis player to abruptly and immediately take their racket back, resulting in an awkward and rushed movement. The end result is the student still feels rushed and a lack of power. Once again, this throws off the natural timing that is concerned with all the top tennis pros in the world: Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova – Each one of these professional players have smooth and efficient games. Had they taken this “tennis myth” to heart, they likely would not be able to hit as well as they do.

Top professional players have a smooth rhythm in their strokes, and the preparation and takeback is no exception. Top pros take their rackets back in a smooth, efficient and dynamic manner. They actually establish what is called a “unit turn.”

Tennis Myth #3 Technique should come naturally to people, and you shouldn’t think about it

False. This tennis myth implies that a tennis player should not think about tennis technique, but that good technique will come on it’s own. But this is not true. Optimal technique is based on a very defined set of movements that seperate higher level players from average tennis players. There are important fundamentals and checkpoints in tennis technique that often has to be taught and consciously ingrained in practice to have in your own game.

Tennis Myth #4 Genetics and “natural born-talent” are what is responsible for having the skills to be a good player

False. This tennis myth implies that you either have the “game” or you don’t. Although top pros, such as Roger Federer, Nadal, Roddick have characteristics to their game that seem almost godly, this is due to nothing else but technically perfect technique.

Ofcourse, they may have an advantage over the rest of us, due to their training, resources and coaching, this doesn’t mean you can’t atleast improve your own tennis game to tournament level ability.

Often times, this is used as an excuse or rationale.

Tennis Myth #5 Make contact with the tennis ball further in front of the body to improve your power

This tennis advice improperly teaches a tennis player to constantly “tweak” their contact zone during the split moments prior to contact. The idea of this myth is that the further in front of your body you contact the ball, that this would somehow translate into a better shot. Many tennis students in turn, take this advice and to no avail continue to try to contact the ball further and further in front of the body, although this seldom leads to improvements in the actual shot.

The problem that many teaching pros observe is “late contact” where the arm and racket was behind the body at the critical contact point. So, is the cure is simply to force contact more out in front? No.

Many times, late contact of the tennis ball is a result of a problem in tennis strokes or footwork and not the actual contact itself. This is actually a symptom of a much deeper problem in the tennis technique.

If you are seeking to enroll your child in a tennis program, then you probably want them to make tennis a lifetime sport. A key to that will be finding the right instruction so that they develop a great taste for the game. Conversely, a bad experience can lead to them never wanting to pick up a racquet again.

Obviously, tennis instruction for kids comes in many shapes and sizes. If you want to give your child a simple introduction to the game, they can enroll in a free or low-cost course through your local parks and rec program.

What to Look For When Seeking Out Tennis Instruction For Kids

If you think your child is a budding pro or has extraordinary talent, then you might consider private instruction, even from the first bounce. As your child matures, you will probably change course in finding teaching for him/her also. The child that is just learning the game differs greatly from the one who is striving to make the high school team or advance in the regional rankings.

What exactly do you want to accomplish through the instruction that you find? That will be a good guide as to what instruction you finally choose. Be sure to include your child in the discussion, informing them frankly about any budget limitations if necessary.

Tennis instruction for kids can be broken down into four primary categories: recreational programs, group lessons, semi-private lessons and private lessons. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each:

Tennis Instruction For Kids in Recreational Programs

Recreational programs are often run by the local recreation department or as part of a summer day camp that wants to introduce kids to tennis. The head instructor is often a young adult player who wants a first experience at teaching; other programs use a high school coach, a parent, or, more rarely, a professional instructor.

Other staff members, if there are any, are usually people who have playing experience and believe themselves qualified to teach basic skills. The number of kids per court depends on the program’s popularity, from two to twenty.

For many people, these types of rec programs can be a great way to introduce a child to the game, and can be a great source of tennis instruction for children. The part about little pressure is very attractive to many parents in a sport where “burnout” is often heard and demanding parents sometimes ruin the experience for Junior.

The advantages of using recreational programs for tennis instruction are:

Extremely low cost, usually between $0 and $3 per hour

Lots of buddies around, in most cases

Very informal with little to no pressure

Often emphasize fun and use a lot of large group games

Little or no commitment once the program is over

Often provide racquets

Now, for the weak points using recreational programs as tennis instruction for kids:

Little instructor time per student

Instructor may be of questionable skill level, no guarantees

Instructors may not be skilled teachers, encouragers or motivators

Little hitting time per hour

Lots of waiting time during drills

Little individual attention

Crowded conditions can get dangerous quickly if the instructor is not well trained

These weak points make rec programs a no-go for many, or as is often the case, an option that is used once to introduce the game, then stopped. The reason why many parents do not favor rec programs is because there is absolutely no guarantee that the instructor is a sound tennis player and/or a gifted teacher. There is a huge difference between a chipper and motivated professional and a bored college student who has no idea how to supervise children in a group setting. Rec programs can be great or almost disastrous.

That said, rec programs are a good option in most cases for youngsters who are completely new to the game. They also are a good choice for families who do not have tennis instruction in their budgets.

As for group lessons, they often are the most common format in tennis instruction for kids. These, too, can vary from small groups to large, with instruction being done by a trained professional or simply a skilled player who has achieved some distinction. Logically, the amount of hitting time and instruction will also vary according to group size. In most cases, kids will learn best from experienced and trained pros who have received some sort of tennis teaching accreditation. In other cases, very young children prefer younger instructors who make the group lessons more fun.

The advantages to group lessons are:

-Low cost, often $5-$10 per hour

Peers are involved in group settings

Smaller groups offer somewhat individualized attention

Well-organized lessons will keep children busy most of the time

Lessons can include both singles and doubles instruction

Usually low pressure and lively

What many parents like about group lessons is that they are almost always a step up from a rec program, yet they do not break the budget. The instructors are usually top-notch, especially if you go through a USTA-certified program or a local tennis club. Most of those clubs use their club pros, who do not stay employed for long if they are not good at what they do and are not enthusiastic about their jobs.

The disadvantages of group lessons are:

As group size increases, instructor time and attention per student decreases

If one group member needs extensive stroke repair, it often cannot be addressed

One-on-one hitting with the instructor is limited

Thus, small group lessons are best for kids who are looking to combine the fun of a group setting with getting better at the sport. Such players are still relatively new to the game and have not yet become tournament players or team competitors. As stated before, these types of lessons also are not budget-busters. They are a nice in-between option for players who are somewhat serious about the game, but not deadly serious.

Semi-private lessons also are an option when considering your choices for tennis instruction for kids. They are usually taught by an experienced professional and can work quite well if the two or three players taking the lesson share the same skill level. They blend individualized instruction with peer companionship quite nicely.

Among the strong points of semi-private lessons are:

The cost of private lessons is shared by 2-3 players and their parents

Kids have some peer contact during lessons

Individual attention is much greater in smaller groups

Activity will be almost constant

Hitting with a partner amplifies all tennis singles instruction

The weak points of semi-private lessons are:

Cost jumps to $12-$40 per hour

Major stroke work can still be tough to come by if needed

Younger children often like larger groups

If one child advances more quickly than the other, both can become frustrated

One-on-one hitting with the pro is still limited

Upside and Downside of These Tennis Instruction For Kids

Semi-private lessons can be a good form of tennis instruction for kids who want to learn quickly but like having a friend or two around, as well as kids who are good enough to hit consistently with a friend but not with a pro. As your child becomes involved in competitions, a semi-private lesson can be a good transitional choice for you, and they cut the cost of private lessons in half, at least.

Private lessons are almost always taught by seasoned professionals who do it exclusively for a living. That still does not mean that they all love what they are doing. Try to find a pro that is recommended by others in your community. That extra 10 minutes of driving that you might have to do can make all of the difference.

Among the advantages of private lessons are:

Players receive individualized attention

Improvement is quite rapid

Strokes are fixed through one-on-one lessons that are adapted to the player

Activity is non-stop during the lesson

Hitting with a pro is a thrill for most players and can be great fun

The disadvantages of private lessons are:

They can run as much as $80 per hour

Some kids want other kids around

Fun games are limited

Hitting with a peer does not occur

Tennis Instruction for Kids: Lessons with a Pro

Lessons with a pro in a one-on-one format are good forms of tennis instruction for children who want to improve as fast as possible, as well as kids who need major attention for one or more strokes. That is a benefit that is often not discussed when talking about tennis instruction for kids. A child can learn a stroke incorrectly early in his or her career and never get it fixed until s/he can spend time with a pro in a one-on-one setting.

Tennis Instruction for Kids – Using Private Tennis Lessons

Children who compete regularly in tournaments will almost always opt for private lessons, although some still mix in group lessons to be with friends. In seeking the best tennis instruction for kids, you will probably find that you will advance up this ladder of options as your child’s skill level increases, assuming that she or he sticks with the game and makes it one of his or her passions. One day, your child might go from student to teacher and hopefully pass on the enthusiastic instruction that she or he received when she or he was just a young tyke.

Groundstrokes are normally used on baseline rallies. However, they can also be used in any part of the court. The tennis groundstrokes are shots made by tennis players after the ball bounces on the ground. The backhand stroke comes in two techniques, the two handed backhand and the one handed backhand.

Forehand Groundstroke

The forehand groundstroke is accomplished by bringing the racket across your body, then towards the direction where you like to land the ball. If you are a right handed player, the forehand groundstroke starts on the right side of your body, and then the movement continues across your body as your racket face comes in contact with the ball. The tennis forehand stroke ends with a full follow-through.

After contact, the player continues to rotate the upper body by bringing the racket back in a smooth and relaxed manner. Generally, this forehand groundstroke is the most common weapon for beginner players. In professional tennis, most players also have this shot as their most powerful groundstroke in tennis.

In most cases, the forehand groundstroke is executed with topspin. Topspin adds ball clearance above the net, thus net balls or errors are minimized. It also results in a high bouncing ball which can put your opponent in an awkward situation. Aside from the topspin forehand, a backspin or a slice forehand can also be used especially with approach shots. A flat forehand is another forehand tactic that is usually administered because of its speed. However, the margin of error for this type of forehand groundstroke is very high especially in terms of net clearance.

Backhand Groundstroke

The backhand groundstroke where the player swings his racket around his body, in the direction where the player wants to land the ball. Same as the forehand stroke, the backhand groundstroke is generally used on baseline rallies. However, the backhand groundstroke can also be used if the player wants to execute an approach shot. This tennis stroke can be accomplished with the use of two hands, which is called the two handed backhand. It can also be accomplished with the use of one hand, known as the one handed backhand.

The backhand groundstroke is generally harder to master compared to the forehand stroke. It is also less powerful than the forehand shot.

Comparing the two backhand shots, the two handed backhand is more stable and has more power than the one handed backhand. Thus, this backhand technique is more popular with professional tennis players. However, the one handed backhand also has its own advantages, one of which is it’s longer reach than the two handed backhand.

Ways to improve your tennis groundstroke

Every player’s main objectives in executing the tennis groundstrokes are accuracy and power. The guides below show some ways on how to improve the tennis groundstrokes for both the forehand and backhand.

Racket aspects

Several racket physical characteristics play vital roles in the accuracy and power of your tennis groundstrokes.

Stiffness of the racket

the use of a strong racket is ideal when you want to improve your tennis groundstrokes. A strong racket can resist strong ball impact that prevents it from bending or other forms of deformations. As a result, less energy is absorbed by the racket and more energy is returned to the ball resulting in a better and more powerful shot.

String pattern

The string pattern of your racket has to be considered if you want to improve your tennis groundstroke. In addition, the power of your groundstrokes can also be improved if you use a racket with a more compressed string pattern.

String tension

The string tension is one feature to look into if you want to improve your tennis groundstrokes especially if you want to increase the power of you shots. To increase the power of your tennis groundstrokes, reduce the string bed tension of your racket. The ideal string tension ranges from 3-6 pounds for optimum power. However, reducing the racket string tension can result to a less controllable ball. Thus, it is important not to lower the string tension of your racket without appropriate practice before going into a competitive match.

Shots executions

Proper tennis technique is the most effective way to add power and to attain accuracy on your shots. Here is a guide on how to improve your shots in terms of power and accuracy.

Footwork for Tennis Groundstrokes

Proper footwork is one of the essential aspects to execute tennis groundstrokes. Proper footwork in addition to sound technique contributes to hitting accurate and powerful strokes. In the absence of proper footwork, it is impossible to perform the proper racket swing movement.

To improve your tennis strokes, you need to anticipate the shots of your opponent. Then execute the proper footwork preparation (split step) and move quickly towards the ball to return it and recover to the center baseline. All these movements can only be accomplished with appropriate footwork.

Backswing

To improve your tennis groundstrokes, the two most important aspects to look into is to add power and to add topspin in your shots. To give more power to your shots, a full backswing is not essential. Power can still be generated with a short backswing as long as the racket swing is perfectly executed.

Lower and upper body movements

The movements in your lower and upper body (particularly the shoulder) is also essential to improve and put more power on your tennis groundstroke whether it is the forehand or backhand. Once you land with your toes after the split step, immediately pivot your front foot. Then transfer your weight to your front foot, and as you turn your shoulder, lift the heel of your back foot.

Pivoting your front foot also allows your shoulder to turn sideways. To add more power to your stroke, bend your knees as you complete the initial split step.

Relax and stay loose

A fast racket swing does not mean you’ll generate more power. Power is generated from a well executed swing rather than a very fast and quick arm swing.

Another thing to consider if you want to improve the tennis groundstrokes is your grip. A tense and tight grip can hinder proper forehand and backhand groundstrokes execution and may lead to errors. Just remember to use the proper tennis grip, at the same time hold it in a relaxed manner. This can be done by relaxing your arm and loosen your grip as you start your swing.

Steady head

One of the most important aspects to remember in tennis groundstrokes is your eyes focus. It’s important to keep your eyes on the ball especially during the point of contact. Keep your head and your eyes ‘glued’ to the ball under all circumstances.

Weight Transfer

A properly timed weight transfer also affects the power and accuracy of your tennis groundstrokes. During the backswing execution, your body weight is concentrated on your back foot. Once you start your forward swing, you have to transfer your weight to your front foot.

To add more power to your stroke, drive off your back foot as you swing forward, then land on the ground with your front foot when the groundstroke is completed. This motion can be observed when powerful baseliners go airborne when they hit a powerful groundstroke.

Follow-through

A complete follow-through is essential in a tennis groundstroke execution especially when you want to hit powerful stroke. A complete follow-through is necessary to achieve a world class stroke.

This game is for beginner players and advanced beginners. Kids love this game so much that they often ask for it even when they are advanced players, just wait.

The players line up at one end of the court, in a single file line behind the center mark along the baseline. The instructor stands at the net and feeds a ball to the first hitter.

Each child gets a certain number of chances to get a forehand or backhand into the doubles court (or singles, depending on your students’ skill level). If he or she gets one in, he or she is safe. If not, he or she goes to “jail” by going to the other end of the court where he or she will try to catch a ball on a bounce, hit by another player.

If he or she catches a shot, he or she is free from jail and the player who hit the caught shot goes to jail.

When only one player is left on the non-jail side, he or she tries to hit three shots that don’t get caught before she misses three. If he or she succeeds, he or she wins the game. If someone catches one of her shots, it’s a jailbreak and everyone goes free as a new round begins. There are many variations of this game.

Some require players in jail to sit in one spot. Others allow a jailbreak any time a shot is caught. More advanced players should only be given one feed to hit a shot in. Younger players should be allowed out of jail if they simply touch the ball that comes their way. If the jail gets too crowded, you can limit each player to two steps to catch or touch a ball. You can adjust the rules according to your group’s dynamics and skill level. Be sure to keep this fun game moving quickly and also be careful to sweep any loose balls off the court so that those in jail do not slip or fall on them.

Tennis Game for Kids #2: Around the World

Some teachers call this game a drill; it doesn’t matter what it’s called as long as the children have fun.

It is usually included in lists of fun tennis games for kids. Half of the children line up on one baseline, half on the other, both in single file lines behind the center mark. The instructor feeds the first hitter at the front of the line.

The hitter must hit into the singles court, then run to the back of the line at the opposite end of the court, always to the right.

The instructor can then feed the hitter on the opposite side of the court or allow the two teams to continue the rally.

It depends on the skill level of your group. If they are younger and weaker, hit soft shots that they can retrieve.

If they are older and stronger, allow them to continue the rally. Remember that the less instructor involvement in a game, the better.

When a player hits a shot out or misses a shot, he or she is out.

With 1-3 outs (depending on the stringency of your rules), he or she is out of the game. Once two players are left, they no longer have to run around the net, they simply play points (with a feed each time or not) until one of them accumulates 1-3 outs.

Be sure to tell the players at each baseline to give the hitter lots of room to retrieve each shot.

Also, make sure that the running path to the opposite court is free of loose balls. As players are eliminated, they can hit on another court. This game keeps kids moving and alert and improves their fitness level at the same time. It is an all-time favorite tennis game for kids.

Tennis Game for Kids #3: Bouncing Ball Relay

This game is great to teach children racquet control and to improve their hand-eye coordination. It is especially good for young beginners, unlike games found on many lists of tennis games for kids.

Form two equal teams and have players line up single file behind the baseline, facing the net, with at least 10 feet between the 2-3 lines. Place a cone in front of each line, near the net. On “go”, the first player in each line runs around the cone and back to the baseline, bouncing the ball on the ground with the racquet, as in a dribbling basketball drill.

When the first player in each line crosses the baseline upon his return, the second player can take off dribbling. This relay race is won when one team has all of its players across the baseline. With beginner players, keep a watch on those who might lose control of their ball and wander all over the court. Collisions can be avoided with good supervision. If you only have two lines, spread them out as far as you can to avoid such dust-ups. Young players will be gaining all sorts of skills as they yell and scream and have a ball with this game.

Tennis Game for Kids #4: Bull in the Pen

This is another fun tennis game for kids, especially those who are at a beginner level.

Have the players line up in a single file behind the baseline in the doubles alley. The instructor stands at the net on the opposite side and has one player at a time move to the middle of the court. he or she then feeds a ball to that player, either forehand or backhand.

The player who hits the ball over the net and in goes to the back of the line. The player who does not hit a successful shot must stand behind the baseline in the other doubles alley. This area is called the “bull pen” and the last player who remains outside of it wins the game.

Be sure to keep this game moving so that a large number of players does not have to stand in the bull pen, inactive, for too long of a time. Also be careful that your feeds do not venture too far towards the bull pen area, so that players will not take a big swing and smack a few of their friends.

Tennis Game for Kids #5: No-Net Tennis

This game has been used for many years for children who are just picking up a racquet for the first time. After your students have learned to bounce a ball in front of them and hit it, they need to learn how to hit a ball that is coming toward them.

As any player knows, this requires quite a jump in skill level!

The instructor should stand on one sideline and have the students form a line along the opposite sideline. Both instructor and students are on the same side of the court for this drill. The objective is not to hit the ball over the net, it is simply to make solid contact with the ball. The instructor gently feeds a ball to one player at a time.

Have one player step forward and the other children giving him plenty of room to retrieve your feed. After one bounce, each player should try to hit the ball back to you. Let successful players hit another shot back to you, up to a certain limit. Keep track of each player’s high total for consecutive successful shots.

You will find that the children will compete very quickly to have the greatest number of good shot runs. You should limit the highest total to five or so to keep all players engaged in this excellent tennis game for kids.

Why Use Tennis Games For Kids?

The right tennis games for kids can keep young students motivated, engaged and progressing in their skills at a steady rate. The best games both work on skills and produce a lot of yells and screams of joy. With this list of five as a starter, you can keep your students happy and enthused about the great game of tennis.

Most tennis games for beginners start with a comfortable and intriguing set of games and drills specifically designed to introduce a tennis beginner to the game.

Tennis games for beginners are not only reserved for children, but can also be practiced by adults first learning how to play tennis.

A tennis beginner first learning how to play tennis is often confused and still learning the rules of tennis, so the games they engage in must slowly introduce them to the finer details of the game.

Tennis is a sport that can be difficult to learn for many beginners. The constant repetition required to learn each stroke can become tedious and boring. Once they feel this way about the sport, they can get turned off and choose to do some other activity instead, or worse, go back to leading sedentary lives. In order to keep their interest level, fun tennis games for beginners have been formulated.

A progression for teaching tennis games for beginners

These tennis games are designed to teach the basics of tennis and develop important skills such as footwork, coordination, court sense and even tactics. At the same time, these games are enjoyable and interactive, enhancing the chance that these beginners stick with the sport until such time that they are proficient enough to play actual matches.

The usual progression of learning to hit the ball goes something like this:

Learning to hit the ball

Learning to hit the ball over the net

Learning to hit the ball over the net with direction

Learning to hit the ball over the net with direction and depth

Learning consistency in rallying

Learning variety and control of spin, depth and trajectory

Learning to hit with power

A Key Part of Tennis Games for Beginners: Learning to Control the Ball

Learning to control the ball is always more fundamental than learning spin and power. Tennis games for beginners are therefore more focused on developing a player’s skill at controlling the ball.

Tennis Game for Beginner #1: The Bucket Game

One of the games that teach this is called the bucket game. In this game, 5 buckets are placed in various locations on each side of the net. The participating players each stand on their respective baselines.

The first player tries to hit 10-20 balls into any of the buckets across the net. If the ball doesn’t cross the net, it is added to the balls that the other player will use. The other player does the same thing. After all balls are hit, each player collects all the balls on his side of the net that didn’t land in any of the buckets.

He collects these balls and tries to hit them into the buckets of the other court. After all balls have been hit into the buckets, they are counted and the player who was able to get the most balls into his opponent’s buckets is declared the winner.

Tennis Game for Beginner #2: The School Game

School is one of the simplest tennis games for beginners. It is actually a serve practice drill. Players start at the service line and try to serve into the service box. Once he or she gets three serves into both service boxes, the player will graduate from kindergarten to grade school. This is around 4 feet behind the service line from where he or she will try to get three serves into both service boxes again.

Middle school is about 8 feet from the service line and high school 12 feet away. College is just inside the baseline. Once the player is able to serve from behind the baseline, the player is said to have graduated from school.

A unique game for beginners teaches them control and consistency and helps them resist the urge to showboat or hit outright winners. In this game, players are paired up but the pairs are positioned on opposite sides of the net facing each other. The teams rally by hitting volleys or half volleys and the pair that can sustain the longest rally is the winner.

Tennis Game for Beginner #3: Rallyball

Tennis games for beginners also have to be fun and some are designed to simulate the way points are played in actual matches. Rallyball is a good game because it can accommodate a lot of players who would otherwise not yet be able to rally the ball normally. Players are divided into two teams. It is a simple game.

One player drop-hits the ball to the other court where the first player from the opposing team tries to hit it back. If the ball is hit out or into the net, the serving team wins the point. If the ball lands in the doubles court, the receiving team wins the point. Roles are reversed for the next point while the players on each team rotate so that everyone will get a chance to hit. The first team to score 25 wins.

Tennis Games for Beginners #4: King of the Court

Kings of the court is one of the most popular tennis games for beginners. This game requires the players to pair up. One pair takes their place at the net on one court. They are the kings, queens, rulers or champions. The other pairs line up behind the baseline on the opposite side of the net.

The kings will drop-hit the ball to the first pair of challengers who will then try to dethrone them by winning the point. If they are successful, they have to run over to the other side of the net to assume their positions as new kings.

Simultaneously, the dethroned kings lob the ball back to the next pair of challengers waiting on the baseline as they run to the back of the line of challengers. If the kings aren’t dethroned, the challengers will simply have to go to the back of their line and let the next pair take a crack at dethroning the kings. There is a version of this game for singles as well.

Tennis Games for Beginners #5: Cross Court Rally

Playing live points is always more enjoyable for players because they get to feel what it is really like to hit the ball under a fair amount of pressure. One of the tennis games for beginners that makes use of playing live points while at the same time developing control and consistency is the simple cross court rally game.

Players play individually against each other in this game. They stand at opposite deuce service boxes and try to rally the ball back and forth using only the forehand. They switch to the ad sides and play only backhands. The first player to score 21 wins.

There are many different ways that this game can be played. You can have students play only forehands, even from the ad court. To keep things interesting and fresh, try to modify the games from time to time.

Tennis Games for Beginners #5: Catch & Throw Game

Some tennis games for beginners combine the sport with other sports like baseball. In one particular game, a group of four players line up on the baseline on one side of the court. Across the net, four players take up their places in the service boxes and inside each corner of the baseline.

One of the net players feeds the ball to the first player in line who will then hit it back. The four players will try to catch the ball on the fly. If the ball is caught, lands outside the lines or hits the net, the hitter is replaced by the next player in the line-up. If the ball is not caught and lands within the boundaries of the court, it is scored as a run and the teams switch sides and roles.

Learning From Tennis Games for Beginners

While these games are designed to be fun, coaches should remember that because they are just beginners, they still need constant guidance and encouragement as well. Coaches must try to see what errors in form each player has and immediately correct these mistakes.

Mistakes with stroke technique and footwork are the most common. However, there are more than one way to hit the ball or move to the ball. Coaches must not be too narrow minded with what they think is the right way to play.

Criticism must always be constructive; otherwise, the player will have a negative impression of what it is like being a tennis player. Once you turn someone away from the game, it is highly doubtful if he or she will ever come back again.

Lastly, coaches must listen and communicate properly with the players. They might have a few good suggestions for some fun beginners’ games as well.

It can be a nerve wrenching experience as well as a test of eye hand coordination. It might even be difficult to stay balanced by moving laterally side to side on the tennis court. Even a tennis ball fed a few steps away can serve to be difficult task.

A Tennis Beginner must learn a new skill which requires patience, fortitude and persistence

“People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don’t know when to quit. Most…Succeed because they are determined to,” – George Allen

A quote of Inspiration for a Tennis Beginner

George Allen’s quote has struck me because of the truth behind the statement. In history, we have seen examples of people who have achieved great success although they were chosen out of favor by the masses. But these great individuals throughout history continued to persist, just as a tennis beginner would in order to learn how to play tennis. How to play tennis for a beginner can be a hard task, because the mind and body must coordinate together and perform the correct tennis stroke within seconds.

In order to learn tennis, a tennis beginner must go through many struggles to improve. Tennis for beginners is not an easy task and can be a test of emotional, physical and mental strength.

Tennis for Beginners is Mostly a Slow, Slow Learning Process

The learning process for tennis beginners can be quite complex at first, while the player desperately clings onto the new information that can be foreign and uncomfortable. The mind and body will be hard at work and it will require a great effort on part of the player to digest all of the new stimuli coming into the brain. Learning the game of tennis is not much different than learning a new skill or trade in any other aspect of life.

Tennis for beginners are a tough experience with many mistakes as part of the learning process. Mistakes must be perceived as a learning experience, not as a personal fault or weakness. Mistakes that tennis for beginners will experience will be numerous while they are still learning to play the game. The new concepts can be confusing and at times overwhelming.

Tennis Beginners Learning Curve

How to Play Tennis for beginners are usually the most difficult time in the experience for the player. A tennis beginner is usually trying to handle the thousands of verbal, physical and auditory feedback that will enter the brain while hitting the tennis ball.

There may even be a psychological storm going inside their mind as they try to grasp the components of how to play tennis.

Even maintaining a crosscourt rally of controlled shots can be a difficult task for a tennis beginner. At this stage, the mind and body is still trying to digest all of the new information fed from the tennis lessons given by the coach.

Even a simple tennis tip can take many hours of practice. One of the best ways a tennis beginner can learn the finer aspects of the game is through tennis lessons. In a tennis lesson, coaches can cater the tennis lessons for beginners helping them cut down on the learning curve. The tennis coach can correct many of the common errors that tennis for beginners make and show them how to refine their tennis technique to create the proper form.

Tennis Beginners Must Develop The Proper Tennis Technique

In every physical sport, the technique and form is essential for improvements. Tennis for beginners usually means spending time learning the rules of the game and how to play tennis. Tennis Beginners should learn tennis technique early on, so they can grow and improve based on the correct foundation. A tennis coach can assist with teaching the tennis technique and the aspects of tennis for beginners.

Tennis technique is important to learn early on for a tennis beginner, as this will set the groundwork in their tennis strokes for their future development as a tennis player. By learning the correct tennis technique early in their development, the tennis beginner can progress to improve based on the right foundation. Poor form and technique should be avoided because it will limit the ability of the tennis player to improve past a certain level. They will be stuck in the boundaries of their poor technique and bad habits and may be struggle to improve.

Tennis for Beginners Involves Making Constant Refinements

Tennis for beginners is a time where the player is open to experiement with their tennis game. Mistakes are okay for a tennis beginner, because they are still learning the game. This is where the true learning takes place, when the player is allowed to experiment with the correct methods and fix any bad habits in their technique.

There will be little pressure or expectation for a tennis beginner to perform well on the tennis court, so this is a great time to try out new concepts and develop the firm foundation that a tennis coach can assist with. When there is less pressure, the tennis beginner will feel more comfortable, since there are no risks or reputation at stake. By making the mistakes on the tennis court and fixing them early in their development, they can learn to develop the correct tennis technique allowing them to reach a higher level of play.

At the first few tennis lessons, tennis for beginners will often consist of ball fed drills where the tennis coach will constantly provide the beginner many tennis tips. These tennis tips are intended to teach the tennis beginner the basic foundation of tennis and show the tennis player any adjustments that need to be made.

Learn from Tennis Lessons

As a tennis beginner, it is important to constantly to make refinements. Refinements can include any part of tennis and it may be in the tennis footwork, tennis strategies, tennis technique or even in the mental game of tennis.

Refinements are simply lessons that must be learned and developed during practice so they can be properly executed in a competitive match situation.

The best tennis beginner advice of all is to take weekly tennis lessons from a knowledgable tennis coach.

Listen to the tennis tips the coach will provide. These tennis tips are important in order to improve. Most importantly, treat each tennis lesson with importance. Ask many questions and clarify any new tennis concepts that seem confusing.

Make Small Progressions and Set Goals

The learning process Tennis for beginners experience are no different than that of learning a new skill in any other part of life. In order to improve, small progressions must be made. By setting a goal, a tennis beginner can measure their progress alongside their goals and make adjustments necessary to reach the goals.

Having a goal in mind will set a mental target and increase awareness and overall productivity towards the goal. A tennis beginner with a goal of playing tournament tennis in two years for example will be much more inclined to practice often and refine their tennis strokes, any bad habits they may accrue as well as advance their understanding of the game of tennis. A player without a goal may wander astray as be less efficient at improving their tennis.
