Winter can be a tough time for tennis players. Cold weather, shorter days, and potentially icy or wet courts can make it difficult to keep up with your training, and players can get demoralised quickly. However, with the right mindset and some adjustments to your routine, you can maintain your skills and even improve during the winter months. Here are some tips for staying sharp on the tennis court during the winter season.

Keep positive

It’s important to realize that keeping supple, fit and sharp will give you an edge going into the season ahead. Embrace the seasons and don’t get down about the fact that the weather is turning colder. If you can keep positive, keep training and keep hitting balls then you’ll come out of the winter as a stronger player than any fellow clubmates who have not bothered to do much over winter at all.

Dress in layers

One of the keys to staying comfortable and performing your best during winter tennis training is to dress in layers. This will help you regulate your body temperature and stay warm without overheating.

Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking material to keep your skin dry (merino wool is awesome for this).

Add a middle layer of insulation, like a fleece or thermal top, to trap heat and provide warmth.

Finally, top it off with a water/wind-resistant outer layer to protect against the elements if you are planning on being outside in very cold or wet conditions.

Don’t forget about your head and feet. These areas are where much of your body heat will be lost, especially when standing around in-between activities, so it’s important to keep them covered and warm. Wear a hat or headband to cover your ears (wind chill can be vicious on ears!) For your feet, wear moisture-wicking socks.

Don’t wear gloves when holding your racket, unless it’s ridiculously cold in which case I’d suggest that you should be playing/training inside anyway. If you wear gloves when playing you’ll not get the right feel, and could end up developing bad habits or slight tweaks in your playing that could be hard to remove in the warmer months.

Be prepared to adjust your clothing as needed. The key to staying comfortable while playing tennis in the winter is to dress in those layers that you can easily add or remove as needed. As I’ve said, start with a base layer and a middle layer, and bring an extra outer layer that you can put on if it gets cold. Be aware of your heat levels and be prepared to adjust your clothing as you go to maintain a comfortable body temperature.

Warm up properly

Warming up is even more important in the winter than in warmer seasons. Cold muscles are more susceptible to injury, so take the time to properly prepare your body for exercise. Start with a few minutes of light cardiovascular activity, like jogging or jumping jacks, to get your blood flowing. Then move on to dynamic stretches, like arm circles and leg swings, to loosen up your muscles. Finally, hit a few balls against a wall or with a partner to get a feel for playing and start to elevate your heart rate.

Take advantage of indoor facilities

If the weather outside is truly frightful, don’t let it keep you from getting your training indoors. Many tennis clubs and facilities have indoor courts that can provide a more controlled environment for practicing and playing. Not only will these courts be free of snow and ice, but they’ll also likely be heated too. Playing indoors can help you focus more on technique and strategy, since you won’t have to deal with battling the elements or additional clothing.

Adjust your expectations

While it’s important to maintain your training routine during the winter, it’s also important to be realistic about what you can accomplish in less-than-ideal conditions. Don’t expect to hit the same number of balls or run the same number of laps as you would in the summer. Instead, focus on quality over quantity and concentrate on the specific skills and techniques that you want to improve. By setting more modest goals and being patient with yourself, you’ll be able to make progress without overdoing it or risking injury.

Video yourself

Video playback can be a helpful tool for tennis players of all skill levels, at any time of year but they can be especially valuable during the winter months when it’s harder to get outside and practice. Consider using a tennis ball machine to work on your footwork and shot-making abilities, and video yourself while you do it if you can.

I highly recommend making use of the camera on your smartphone together with a tripod to video yourself. You can then pause, slow down the footage, break down your technique and identify areas for improvement. You’ll want a tripod that is compact and easy to carry around, but one that can also elevate your phone nicely to the best height for observing your moves. I’ve tried a few and I highly recommend this tripod (available from Amazon).

Mix up your training routine

Focus on your footwork and agility. During the winter months, the courts may be slick and slippery, so it’s important to work on your footwork and agility to maintain your balance and movement on the court.

Practice your serves indoors. If you can’t get to an outdoor court, you can still work on your serve by practicing indoors. Set up a net in a large, open space and focus on getting the ball over the net consistently.

Use a ball machine. A ball machine can be a useful tool for practicing your shots and footwork during the winter. Set up the machine to simulate different types of shots and try to hit the balls consistently.

Work on your mental game. In addition to physical training, it’s also important to work on your mental game during the winter months. Use visualization techniques to imagine yourself playing on the court, and try to stay focused and mentally sharp.

Stay warm and comfortable. Finally, make sure you dress warmly and comfortably for your winter training sessions. Wear tactical layers of clothing (as described above) to stay warm and prevent injury.

I hope these tips are helpful for your winter training!

Many of the concepts of the mind are complex and only beginning to be understood; however, every tennis player can agree that tennis psychology and the ability to master the mental tennis game can make a drastic difference between winning and losing a tennis match.

Mental Tennis Game and the Psychology

Tennis psychology involves anything that relates to the mental tennis game, and improving upon this area through mental tennis tips and increasing mental toughness in tennis. Look back at your own competitive match history and ask yourself, “How many tennis matches have you lost because you were psyched out, or you gave up mentally?” I am sure the answer is quite a few.

The brain controls the body, so mastering the mental part of tennis can be an astounding difference that can determine the fate of the match. The science of tennis psychology is now also applied to players at all levels as well. Sports Psychologists are helping athletes all over the world to use their minds to improve their game at full time tennis academies. As tennis is a very popular sport, an entire area of sports psychology is assigned to it, this field is called “Tennis Psychology”.

Tennis psychology is not simple coaching or mere mental tennis tips but in fact it is a proper study of the biology of players, the techniques of the sport and researched methods to better one’s game by focusing one’s mind.

What is Tennis Psychology?

Tennis psychology provides various techniques for players to improve their game. Using mental tennis principles to win tennis matches can be a rewarding strategy for tennis players at any skill level. These mental tennis ideas include:

1. Controlling ones thinking

The first mental tennis suggestion to win matches is to think positive. A person’s mindset is a key factor for a winning tennis game. Tennis psychology suggests the player keep his thoughts in check and not let negativity take over. If a player starts thinking negatively his body will react in a negative way. The player will feel tensed and with that he would react in involuntary ways as his ability to reason is compromised. He will act in ways that are not as effective for his game.

Tennis Psychologists suggest the players keep their thoughts positive and this can be done by remaining aware of your thoughts while playing. The more aware the player is of his thoughts the more he can push them to develop a more positive thought pattern. Examples include: positive self-talk prior to game point, pumping themselves up after winning a big point or simply fueling the mind with positive emotions and keeping a enthusiastic mentality during the tennis match. It’s important to maintain clear judgment and also stay motivated no matter what the score is or how badly he or she is losing the tennis match. Mastering the thought patterns to improve the tennis psychology aspect of the game is a difficult task to fulfill whilst concentrating on the fast paced game, but one that can make a huge difference.

2. Managing the emotions

The second mental tennis toughness suggestion is to manage the emotions during a tennis match. Being overly excited or being under excited both are bad for a player’s game. Tennis psychology suggests that a player should keep a balanced level of arousal throughout his game. This pertains to the energy level of a player. An overly excited player might make hasty uncalculated decisions and an under-excited one might not have the required level of motivation to play to his best abilities.

3. Factors of The Game That Are Intangible

The third suggestion to improve your mental tennis game is to identify the factors of the game that you can control and focus less on the one’s that are out of your control. Once on the court, many factors can arise that affect a player’s game but are out of his control. Examples of this would include: a player can’t control the abilities of his opponent or the weather or court conditions. He can’t control the supporters; however, the thing a player can control is how much attention he gives to these factors. If a player concentrates on these factors instead of focusing on the game at hand, he is bound to get de-motivated. He loses energy which he should use towards his own game’s strategy. Tennis psychology helps him work on this.

4. Refining one’s focus

Fourth, a big part of mental tennis toughness is to refine the focus to only the tennis match at hand, rather than obsess over the intangibles. The human brain works like a machine, but it is one better as it can be multitask. It can focus on many factors at one time. However, a task is best performed when most or all of the brain’s focus is on it. Tennis psychology teaches the players to keep their mind concentrated on the game throughout. At the beginning of any match, each player’s focus is the game but with time and uncontrollable factors, like time pressure or external pressure or the environment, they become less focused. Tennis psychology aids the players to keep their focus in check, and if they lose concentration to revert their attention back to the game.

5. Empty the Mind

During a tennis match, it’s important to focus clearly on the task at hand to win matches. It’s essential to clarify your mind by focusing in the current state of the match. This is a big part of mental tennis. Perceiving beforehand what the player’s next move will be is a very effective skill in a tennis match. A player’s imagination is one of the most useful tools he has, as visualizing his action helps him choose better techniques to tackle his opponent. With practice, tennis players know pretty much every consequence of their different hits. So by focusing their minds, they can actually visualize the events of the game and react better to the opponent’s moves.

6. Improve Confidence

If a tennis player wants to be a victor of the tennis match, then he or she has to make shots and execute the various tennis strategies with confidence. Confidence is a big part of a strong mental tennis game. Players that are considered to have mental toughness are those that execute well under pressure and appear to have confidence (even if they feel terrible) Remaining calm and confident when facing a challenge is a simple and effective tool that tennis psychology teaches to tennis players. Lack of confidence clouds a player’s judgment and makes him question his action, even before he performs them, which make him lose time and energy. Doubt in his own actions can lead to the player not to take the required risks of this game. Surety of one’s actions makes the tennis player perform better.

7. Identify and Removing Poor Thought Patterns

One can create miracles if one has a belief in their talent. Faith in one’s abilities is most vital for success in any endeavor. Limiting beliefs are one’s lack of this faith. It’s a complicated characteristic of the human psyche. It’s a weird way in which the human brain itself sabotages the player’s success. If a person even, deep down, doesn’t have faith in his own luck and strengths he can’t win. He lets the external factors affect their reactions in a game. Tennis psychology helps the person to fight these limiting beliefs and push through their strengths.

8. Getting in the zone

Tennis psychology proposes three ways of entering the zone where the mind and body are at sync. To have a strong mental tennis game, a player should strive to put themselves in the zone more often in a tennis match. The “zone” is a feeling of both immense focus and concentration where the mind is focused solely on hitting the tennis ball. Players that find themselves in the zone often usually are the best.

Roger Federer is a good example of a player that finds himself in the zone in many professional tennis matches. Once Federer is in the “zone,” he will hit winner after winner anywhere from the court. This is the same feeling that player’s at all levels should strive to achieve, which will put their mental tennis game to the next level. These are: The unit turn in tennis is one of the most important key aspects of tennis technique. Simply stated, the unit turn is where the body and racket turn sideways together as a “unit” to begin the preparation phase of the tennis stroke, whether its forehand or backhand strokes.

silencing the mind

trust in one’s strengths

non-judgment

These techniques are the basis of tennis psychology. These aid the players to perfect their brain to keep focusing on the game and keep their confidence boosted and as a result an improved game. Understanding and application of these techniques in areas even other than tennis of life ensure success.

By the management of self-thoughts, tennis players can tackle any challenge he faces with confidence. Tennis psychology gives the tennis player an upper hand on his opponent. Practice makes perfect, so regular practice of these techniques during training will increase his ability to effectively apply them in actual matches.

Tennis psychology not just helps a player improve his game it also helps a player become more efficient in judging the reactions of your opponent as it improves the concentration and visualization abilities of the player. The player becomes more pro-active.

Each person’s brain reacts differently. Therefore, the effect on these tennis psychology tips on the player’s abilities would vary. Each player’s emotions, confidence and most importantly the limiting beliefs are different. So each player has to focus on different areas of their mind’s abilities. Once a player understands his own mental strengths and weaknesses, he can play the best tennis with his abilities. And tennis psychology is one of his strongest strategies.

Most tennis players overlook the important mental training for tennis, as this is often an invisible part that separates the tennis champions from the everyday weekend warrior. For pro players, tennis mental training is as important as the physical element and on court tennis training, because the player with a stronger mental tennis game will be the deciding factor in a competitive tennis match.

If you’ve ever felt like you are not winning as much as you should, the first thing you probably assessed about your own tennis game were your strokes and equipment. You change techniques, change rackets, change strings and string tension, hoping that all this will result in you becoming a better player. Then you go out on court and the same thing happens – you lose matches you know you should have or could have won. You were looking for answers in the wrong place because what you really needed to do was to take up tennis mental training.

Tennis Mental Training On the Professional Tour

There have been many professional players who, by incorporating and emphasizing tennis mental training, were able to remake themselves from just being a talented player capable of a few flashes of brilliance into true great champions.

It’s hard to believe that Roger Federer, widely considered as the greatest player of all time, started out as a temperamental youngster who often caved mentally when the pressure was on. But he learned and made the right choices, just when people were beginning to doubt if he would ever live up to his vast potential.

If you still don’t believe that tennis is a mental game as well as a physical game, then it can be guaranteed that you will not enjoy it in the best way possible. Even if you say you are only playing for exercise, you are still better off if you improve your mental approach to playing. This is because the connection between mind and body is much stronger than you might be aware of, and the more mentally fit you are, the more physically fit you will also be.

Principles Of Tennis Mental Training

There are a few basic principles to learn about tennis mental training. The most important aspect is focus. There are two different aspects to this issue. First, when the ball is in play, you should only be focusing on the ball and nothing else. You should be aware of where you are on the court and where your opponent is, but your focus should be on the ball itself alone.

Conversely, when the ball isn’t in play, you should be focusing only on things that are happening on the court. Don’t be bothered by things that are beyond your control like what’s happening on the adjacent courts, in the stands or elsewhere. Rather, focus only on things that you can control. Tell yourself to move your feet, stay low on your shots and follow through completely. This is also the time for you to think about tactics and adjustments you need to make as the match is going on. Focus is also about knowing how to take it one point at a time.

Awareness and Self Confidence in The Mental Tennis Game

Don’t dwell on the last point or any “big” point or chance that you may have blown. Regroup and focus on the current point. Additionally, don’t think about the next points as well. If you have just held serve after breaking, try your best not to relax and think only about your next service game. Try to get another break by focusing on your opponent’s service game.

This brings us to the next aspect which is awareness. We have mentioned that you need to analyze yourself and your opponent as the match progresses and make the required adjustments. This ability to analyze comes from being aware of what is going on. For example, if you are playing against someone who has a weak backhand, then it makes sense to play most of your shots to that side. But what if he is having a good day with that particular wing? You need to be aware of things like this and make the adjustments.

Another example is when the conditions are affecting play. If you start the match playing with the wind, you should hit with more topspin to help keep your shots from sailing out. But then of course, players change ends every odd number of games. So inevitably, you will find yourself playing against the wind. If you are not paying attention, you will continue to hit with topspin and find that your shots are landing too short, making it easy for your opponent to hit aggressive shots against you.

It is important to note that there is such a thing as too much analysis. You’ve heard the phrase “paralysis by analysis.” This is when you overthink things and end up doing nothing. Keep things as simple as possible. Maybe you didn’t complete your follow through so you hit your last groundstroke into the net. Take a practice swing and follow through completely, just to remind yourself. Then tell yourself you won’t make the same mistake again.

The Importance of Planning in Tennis Mental Training

To keep things simple, you must already have a plan in place before the match starts as well as alternative plans in case the first plan isn’t working. Tennis requires mental flexibility, not just physical. You can also call it versatility. If in the physical sense you stretch your muscles and joints, then in the mental sense, you try to open up your mind. This is another key requirement of tennis mental training.

The importance of making adjustments in a match has been stressed already, but this ability to make the right adjustments comes only when your mind is open and willing to try new things. A mid-match adjustment can be as simple as just playing the same game but being more aggressive. For instance: you start a match playing safely and just hitting everything to your opponent’s backhand, thinking you’ll eventually out rally him.

As the match goes on, you find that he is instead being aggressive, hitting slice approaches and coming to the net where he has good volleys. Never mind that he misses a few backhands, but by being the aggressor he has rendered your strategy ineffective. This is the time to make a simple adjustment. Keep playing to his backhand but be more aggressive. Hit harder and deeper. Come to the net yourself and make him hit backhand passes. If he passes you, then all credit to him. But more often than not, you will be on the winning end of most points because you will be the one forcing errors.

Tennis Mental Training: Developing a Positive Attitude During a Match

The last aspect of tennis mental training is cultivating a positive attitude that shows through your body language. Positive thoughts promote a positive body language and vice versa. In other words, even if you are behind in the scoreboard and feeling frustrated and desperate, if you can somehow force yourself to keep your feet moving, looking energized, fresh, focused and not stressed, you’ll find that you will start believing that you can still win.

Anything is possible in tennis because a match isn’t finished until “game, set, match” is called. Take it point by point and, who knows; before you know it, you’re the winner already. On the flipside, if you are leading 5-1 and then your opponent pulls to within 5-4, don’t panic. Keep playing aggressively and remind yourself about what you need to do.

Mental Tennis Fitness: Another Factor in Tennis Mental Training

Physical fitness clearly affects not only what we do on the tennis court but also what we do in our daily activities. The same is true with mental fitness. That is why tennis mental training is actually useful not just on court but also in life. If you know how to focus, you can control yourself and be disciplined in your work or school. If you are aware, you are more sensitive to others and you can become more compassionate and understanding. If you have an open mind, then you will learn from your mistakes and do the right thing next time, whether it is in your relationships or career. You will stop making excuses and be comforted by the fact that, yes, you have a choice in life. As on court, you can choose to be passive or aggressive, positive or negative, try your best or give up.

Remember that no one is in a position to judge you for any of your choices. Just keep in mind that you will have to live with the consequences of those choices. If Roger Federer never chose to stop being temperamental and immature, he would have to regret that he never became a 16-time grand slam titlist

In order to develop tennis mental toughness, player’s must be mentally strong and capable to win the inner game inside every tennis match. The biggest battle in some cases is not the opponent, but rather a player’s own mind. Therefore, the development of mental toughness in tennis is not only a necessity, but perhaps an essential.

Mental toughness in tennis is not a genetics thing. Players are not born with the natural ability to be mentally tough in tennis. Most of the time, the qualities that make up a winning tennis player’s mind is the behaviors, attitudes and mindset of the individual player. Confidence comes not just from playing tennis, but a routine refinement of one’s mental skills in tennis.

Humans have the distinct ability to determine a person’s tennis mental toughness the second the opponent walks into the court. A player with a strong mental tennis game will easily show his or her traits subconsciously.

In this article, we will discuss the factors of tennis mental toughness and how you too can develop the mindset of tennis mental toughness

Learning Tennis Mental Toughness

In tennis, the most basic objective is to hit the ball over the net. When someone starts to play tennis, he or she is taught the basic grips, stances and groundstrokes. They are fed the ball which they then have to try to hit with their rackets in order to somehow get it over the net.

While there are some beginners who get the hang of it more quickly than others, they all frequently fail to do this at first; yet you can immediately see the kind of player they’ll eventually turn out to be, in terms of their potential for developing their mental toughness in tennis. It can be seen by how they react when they fail to get the ball over the net.

Do they laugh? They may laugh at first, but how do they get as more and more shots go awry? Do they get frustrated or downright angry? Or maybe they just get serious, try to listen more closely to the instructions and make the requisite adjustments?

Coincidentally, it is at this point – at the very beginning – that mental toughness in tennis can and should be taught. Like any new skill, it takes a certain amount of time before a certain degree of proficiency can be attained in tennis. Because there will expectedly be a lot of mistakes early on, beginners need to be taught how to deal with these errors. This is all part of learning.

Learning Roger Federer’s Mental Toughness in Tennis

Unfortunately, many people want to be Roger Federer right away and hit the ball as sweetly as he does. They see the pros make it all look so easy and hear the commentators gasp at the unforced error that just misses the line.

This all reinforces upon their minds that mistakes are failures and are not acceptable. But they are part of the process! It would be wrong for a teacher to say that making the same mistake over and over again is a good thing, and that is why mistakes should be corrected as soon as possible. But it is also not the worst thing ever. Rather, it should be accepted as an integral part of learning and improving. Developing the right attitude toward making mistakes is the foundation for learning mental toughness in tennis.

Emotions and Attitudes Affect Tennis Mental Toughness

At higher levels of the game, where players may find themselves in highly competitive situations, emotions may play too much of a part in the process of playing. When it gets tight, players may get so tense that they start rushing and their techniques break down.

Additionally or alternatively, they may get mad and begin to vent in a negative way, like throwing tantrums, cursing and abusing rackets. But if these players are taught how to deal with mistakes, these mental meltdowns would become rarer. Even if they were taught early on that errors are part of the learning process, this lesson needs to be reinforced time after time.

This is especially important to learn because at higher levels, players make different kinds of mistakes. There are not only mistakes of execution but also mistakes of shot selection. In other words, lessons for developing mental toughness in tennis should be reinforced the entire time that a player is actively participating in the sport.

Mistake Management – An Important Tennis Mental Toughness Skill

A good way of reminding a player to not get too worked up over making mistakes is to constantly remind him or her that the last point and the last shot should be left in the past. It is the next point that matters now. It helps to get the player in the right frame of mind. When the mind is in the moment, a player will be able to summon his or her best tennis. This brings up the next important thing in developing mental toughness in tennis, which is focus.

Focus is the ability to pay attention to things that matter, things that will bring results while at the same time ignoring or simply accepting and dealing with things that cannot be controlled. Focus is something that a player needs to have before and during a match. Even in a practice session, focus is required. When a player focuses, he or she is aware of what his or her body feels at that moment. If there are any issues with injuries or fatigue, a player can make proper adjustments and do the right thing.

It is surprising that many players ignore or are simply unaware of a lot of physical issues before they go out to play. They might forget to tape an ankle that was recently sprained or put an elbow brace when they know that they just recovered from tennis elbow. Or maybe the weather was cool and the player forgot to adequately stretch and warm up, leading to a sluggish performance. This self-awareness has a lot to do with a person’s self-discipline. As with any other aspect in a person’s life, discipline and focus will go a long way in the development of his or her mental toughness in tennis.

Blocking Out Distractions: Crucial for Tennis Mental Toughness

A more obvious aspect of focusing is the ability to block out distractions. Whatever is happening in the stands, on the adjacent courts, outside the tennis facility or anywhere but the court where a player is playing should be dealt with and ignored. Corollary to this, elements like the position of the sun, heat, wind and rain interruptions should also be taken as something that is “just there” and no complaints should be made about it. These things affect all the players, not just one. Things like these do not make it more or less fair for one player or another.

Throughout the history of the sport, the most mentally tough players were all famous for their ability to focus only on the things that matter and that they can control. If one player is less bothered by all these supposedly distracting elements, then he or she already has a big weapon against his or her opponent – and that is mental toughness.

Tennis is a game of starts and stops. What happened in the last point is always not as important as what will happen in the present point. At the same time, human nature dictates that our attention spans do not last forever. It is simply not possible to focus on something for too long, unless you’re talking about a spiritual experience like meditation or prayer. But on a tennis court, the starts and stops require that a player should also have a mental rhythm consistent with the rhythm of the match he or she is playing. This is another challenging aspect of developing mental toughness in tennis, and it is where the importance of rituals comes to play. Rituals help players regroup and refocus.

Developing Rituals To Create A Stronger Tennis Mental Toughness Game

At the pro level, it is common to see a player straighten his strings between points. Some take practice swings, in an effort to remind themselves about proper stroke mechanics. Whatever someone’s rituals are, they should always only help the player and not distract or annoy the opponent.

However, there are times when a player will do all kinds of elaborate rituals, seemingly in an effort to provoke the other player.

If this is done intentionally, then it is gamesmanship, and while it is strictly not against the rules, it is also not keeping with the spirit of sportsmanship.

If the rituals are unintentionally distracting, then the other player just needs to deal with it like he deals with all the other extraneous factors previously mentioned.

Rituals and the ability to regroup and refocus on the task at hand help keep the mind in the present. As mentioned above, a mind in the present is the best thing to have when a player wants to be able to truly play his or her best tennis. What someone learns in practice can really be brought to the court and used to the fullest extent against an opponent.

A big serve and a killer forehand can be put on full display. It would be easy to attribute a player winning a match because of physical and technical superiority, and in some cases, it is actually enough to get through. But when all things are more or less equal, the player who can focus more, stay in the moment more and calmly accept errors more will be the player who goes home with the victory. It will not only be because of his or her serve or forehand, but ultimately, the biggest weapon he or she wielded was that thing called mental toughness.

No matter how skillful you are, physically winning a tennis match can still be out of your reach if your mind is not conditioned. Below are some of the tennis mental game techniques and training for every player in order to condition their mind to win tennis matches.

Visualization and self confidence

Visualization is a big part of the tennis mental game. Sports Psychologists are using visualization to train athletes to strengthen their mental tennis game. Visualization means your mental ability to create events or happenings in your mind. In other words, you can visualize yourself attaining your goals to serve excellently in tennis, or improving you skills in tennis games or simply you imagine yourself better than what you are in your present condition for you to be able to build your self confidence or self belief. In the end visualization can help you peak in your tennis games.

Every tennis player should do visualization exercises prior to a tennis match. Spend several minutes prior to a tennis match visualizing that you are going to play the best tennis match you ever played in your life. Imagine yourself playing in the court with excellent first service and second service percentage. You can also visualize that you will be able to use you powerful groundstrokes to make you opponent more vulnerable. Above all, visualize yourself winning the tennis match no matter who is your opponent.

Visualization does not come easily by just imagining things. In doing this you have to use all your senses. The sense of touch that you can feel how you grip your racket and how you toss you ball when you serve. Use your sense of hearing to imagine that you hear all the cheers of your supporters or boos of your opponent’s supporters. And most importantly, you should make use of your sense of feeling, seeing and hearing to hear to the shouts and the cheers, the different colors and the warmth feeling the spectators give you in the court when you hit your winning ball. By doing this training every day, as time goes by you will start to develop your self confidence.

Self-hypnosis

Self hypnosis is another part of the tennis mental game. Today, at full time junior tennis academies, they designate specific parts of the training day just for mental tennis training. One of the methods used to train elite players is self hypnosis and self talk on court.

In playing tennis, what you feel or what your emotions are during the match are big factors that affect your game performance. This means that during tennis matches, your thoughts and your emotions should work hand in hand for you to be at your best. Many professional players use this in their mental tennis training to achieve their goals as you see them talking to themselves on court.

On one hand, what you say when you are on court does affect the way you play your tennis games. This is because normally the words that come out from your mouth are expressions of your real thoughts and your real emotions deep inside your head, and therefore these expressions tend to manifest itself both externally and internally.

One way for players to develop positive self-talk can even be done during practice or during the match itself. To win tennis matches you have to introduce positive self-talk. Tell yourself that you have the skills and techniques to defeat your opponents. Tell yourself not be frustrated or angered when you miss a hit. Tell yourself not to complain a lot when a line man or the referee makes a bad call, because it will just distract your concentration.

And above all talk to yourself to concentrate and focus on your game with the goal of winning it. This technique of a solid tennis mental game is crucial especially when you are down in a match, because it can help you motivate yourself. This is very important in tennis matches considering once you are on court, you work all alone (especially in Grand slam tournaments) from the beginning of the match until a winner is declared. Therefore, your self-motivation by talking to yourself is vital.

Mental Tennis Strength

Mental tennis strength is a crucial attribute to be a winning tennis player. Not only does a player require the skills and technique necessary, but winners must also possess mental tennis ability.

Developing your mental strength is very important in every tennis match. No matter how good you are in every physical attribute in a tennis match, your chances of winning tennis matches are limited if your mental strength is weak. Mental strength means your ability to focus on every single match and every single point without a lapse. Hence every player must train themselves accordingly for the tennis mental game.

How to train yourself to develop the mental tennis strength you need every time you face your opponent?

One way to do it is daily and constant practice, and this is what all professional players do. They still practice playing tennis regularly no matter how good they already are. They practice when there are no upcoming tournaments and they practice more when a tournament is fast approaching.

During practice, maintain your objectives of winning every point to the best of your ability. Don’t take the practice for granted because generally your performance in practice reflects your performance in the actual games.

The second part of the tennis mental game is to include critical games situations in every practice you do. Mental tennis strength is more crucial when you are pressured to win points. Like for example in tiebreakers, a situation when you are down with your service game at 0-40, or you are in a situation that you only need to win two to three points to win a match. These are just examples where the right mental tennis training is crucial for you to stay focus and aim for a point in every hit.

In every tennis game, it is possible that a match can go for a very long time like the longest match in tennis history between Isner and Mahut in 2010 Wimbledon. If both players did not have the proper mental tennis training, neither of them would be able to finish the match. The best way to do this is to keep practicing for long hours until such time that you think your physical body can’t do it anymore but your mind is still willing to persevere.

Relaxation techniques

Nervousness and anxiety are common emotions that players feel before each game. In addition, many players are very emotional when they score a point or worse when they make an unforced error. Some examples of this are the throwing balls to the spectators, banging of racket to their head or even breaking their racket with their bare hands. Every time players do this, they spend more of their energy in their emotions and most of the time they lose focus of the game. Hence relaxation techniques are very important to minimize these negative emotions before and during the game.

Audio tapes

Mind relaxation is very important to develop the tennis mental game, especially before every tennis match. When your mind is relaxed, it means you can concentrate totally on your upcoming match, but if your mind is full of other things other than you match then you have the tendency to lose focus. Many players like to listen to a certain type of music when they are traveling on their way before a big performance. Like for example, Wayne Rooney loves to listen to Susan Boyle’s album when he is on the bus on their way to the stadium where they are going to play. Listen to relaxing music rather than rock music.

Breathing techniques

Mental tennis training also involves learning how to control the body. Taking beep breaths is one way to relax your tense mind and muscles. This tennis mental game aspect is very important to do before and during the game. The players should always remember to take deep breaths. Experts suggest to inhale and exhale slowly, which calms the body. Notice some players taking their time before each serve; this is the best time to relax your mind and body by taking a walk to the fence and back to service area. Deep inhale and exhale will also help players to overcome their strong emotions while on court.

10 Minute pre-match silent moment

In this tennis mental game technique, all you need to do is find a quiet place to be alone to contemplate for at least 10 minutes before you go on court. Just sit and relax and close your eyes and clear your mind of any negative thoughts. Then after five minutes of sitting, stand up and do the inhale exhale exercise until you are ready to go out to the court.

Control Body language

Body language or body posture reflects any player’s mental and physical condition, and to be in proper posture will tell your opponent that you are tough and strong enough to defeat him. The most important part of mental tennis training is learning to control body language. However, if you show your opponent that you are not conditioned mentally and physically through you body language, then it will boost your opponent’s confidence to defeat you.

Hence in every game, each player must always condition their mind that no matter what your real condition is you should always project that you are in your best condition. Like for example if your opponent sees that your shoulders are sagging when you are down, it will create more encouragement to your opponent. But if you continue the game with your head up while calming yourself, your opponent would not be able to take advantage of you.

Mistake management skills

Every player makes mistakes, but a great player converts every mistake into an opportunity to improve his game plan. To convert every mistake into an opportunity does not only need physical skills, but the player has to have the cognitive approach to do it. Like for example, if your technique is not working with your opponent’s approach, then you have to be mentally ready to accept it. At the same time, be mentally alert to analyze the situation and come up with the right counter attack.

Post-performance review:

Another tennis mental game strategy that can help players perform better in their matches is to watch their every performance in recorded video. In this way, the player is able to analyze the good and the bad aspects in his or her games.

A player cannot achieve being a pro without the needed tennis confidence in his game. Developing tennis confidence is a journey as you go through a phase in your sport. Being too technical is actually not the biggest factor in developing your tennis confidence. It is your attitude and perspective on how you play the tennis match.

Building Tennis Confidence

Whether you are a novice or a pro, it really takes time to build up tennis confidence. Start off with simple ways to develop it. Some may be common sense yet hard to apply. Some can challenge your perspective and impose in you attitude that can actually help you not just in tennis but in life as well. What is more important is that you are willing to learn to build your tennis confidence and you have an open mind to make learning more fruitful and easy.

Tennis Confidence Starts in the Mind

In every match, mental tennis training plays a role in confidence. Players that possess a strong tennis confidence usually gains an immediate edge over his or her opponents. But let’s discuss mental tennis training part that goes inside your own mind.

The mistakes that you make can be greatly affected by your confidence in tennis. First off, learn to accept your mistake and let go to improve. This advice in building tennis confidence is actually applicable to our everyday life as well. Learning to accept your mistake takes a big effort for most of us. In tennis, as you practice throughout, you see your mistakes in your shots, in your stance, or in how you hold your racket. Sometimes, it takes another person to point out these mistakes. But what do you do when you find out about it?

Learning Tennis Confidence Through Mistake Management

Do you do something to improve or avoid that same mistake? If none, then you are not learning at all. You did not acknowledge that mistake if you are not doing anything about it. When you accept that mistake, you have to understand how it affects your game. Analyze the proper way in executing or correcting that mistake. Letting go of that mistake is when you finally avoid repeating that same error.

Being aware of your errors and knowing how to correct it can boost your confidence as you play your game. It gives you control as you play. Having that sense of control makes you believe that you can actually win the game.

Developing Tennis Confidence

Next, set challenging yet realistic goals. Never set a goal where you know initially that it is almost next to impossible to attain. You need to make a goal that you can work on. Something that is at par to your level of play.

It may be conservative yet it should be challenging. Plot a schedule or a timetable in reaching that goal. As you progress, increase the standard of your game. This way, you level up your skills as you continue to play.

To develop that tennis confidence, you need to set certain parameters or specific goals that has to be achieved in a definite time. This is your gauge in measuring how much you have improved.

As you continue to set your goal, your confidence develops as you become aware the level of play that you can execute. It is that awareness that contributes to the improvement of your tennis confidence.

Refining your Tennis Confidence Skills

Practice often. The more you become adept to the game, the higher your tennis confidence gets. Practice daily to continuously hone your skills. It does not have to be in a match. It can be an individual game using a backboard or a practice wall or a ball machine. If you play with another player, set a specific match. You have to be clear to each other how you want the game to be played, on what drill to focus on and how do you divide the time to spend on specific drills that you want to work on.

It is only in practice that you develop the natural flow of the game in you, from your swing to the way you hit the ball. This is can greatly affect your tennis confidence once everything comes naturally in you. Once you play in an actual match, your swing, your stance and your hit should all flow naturally to keep your confidence in check. This as well contributes to the concept that you can control your game. And as mentioned earlier, the more you control your game the higher your tennis confidence gets.

Mental Tennis Training on Confidence

Practice on your visual contact with the tennis ball daily. This way it enhances your focus whether you are stationary or moving. For you to be able to properly hit the ball, you have to set your eyes on it. Otherwise, you will either miss the ball or worst it will be off-course. Focusing on the ball while moving will definitely be a challenge on your eyes to focus well on the ball. There are a lot of exercises to help train your eyes to focus on one thing with you moving. Make this part of your exercise so you get to develop a natural focus on the ball. That way, when you are on the game itself, your confidence will level up more as you are familiar where the ball is and you get to see where it is going.

Make sure that you focus on the ball and not to your opponent. This is important as when you focus on your opponent the more likely you lose track of the ball. So it is crucial to make your focus on the ball alone. Having that kind of focus can make you play more effectively.

Calming the Mind to Enhance Tennis Confidence

Develop your mental stability. Learn how to process your emotions and channel it appropriately before, during and after a game. Even during practice, you have to cultivate that mental stability to put your emotions at bay. Sometimes as you play whether on a game or during practice, you get too emotional. You get exasperated, frustrated, overwhelmed or plainly sad. Usually these emotions manifest when you missed a shot or probably executed an incorrect swing or hit the off the court. Don’t get too worked up with it. What matter is you are aware.

What you do about it is the more vital part. If your emotions are stable, your confidence will not waver regardless of such incident. It’s a matter on how you perceive the outcome of your game or a certain situation. How you react can actually be manipulated by you.

Tennis Confidence Exercises and Routines

You can do deep breaths to lessen your frustration, as frustration can lead to a lack of tennis confidence. Don’t channel your frustrations or sometimes anger on the ball or on how you swing. If you do this, your play will become so bad that at times you will lose in the end. Tennis confidence can be nurtured if you keep these negative emotions at bay. Never let the emotions dictate how your play will end.

Creating Consistency Towards Confidence in Tennis

Try to be consistent as much as possible. This applies to your swing, your focus and your emotions. When you keep all of these three in check, the more likely your tennis confidence will stay at a high level. However, during play whenever you are doing a return shot, you are sometimes placed in a difficult position where it would be hard to regain the previous position. That is okay.

Being consistent does not necessarily mean being in the same stance, doing the same shot and giving the right amount of power to the ball. You are more consistent if you do not panic right away and instead calmly try to see what other possible stance you can execute so you can hit the ball effectively. Rushing to hit the ball without working out a position to manage your play is not being consistent. Not only will it make your play bad, it will affect your confidence level as well. It gives you a feeling that you can’t control your game.

Final Thoughts on Tennis Confidence Building

Given the advices in developing your tennis confidence, this should harness your mental training to have that winner perspective. Tennis confidence is not something you develop overnight or on one practice only. It is a process that takes time, dedication and discipline. As long as you keep your mind open, the possibility is limitless. So, do you have what it takes to be a true tennis player, physically, emotionally and mentally?

Most players do not possess the mental toughness for tennis that the demands and pressures of a tennis match require. Mental tennis tips can help develop that strength.

Without practicing mental tennis tips, and developing mental toughness for tennis, you will very likely lose to lesser players. Mental tennis tips can help you gain the confidence, consistency, and concentration needed to win game after game.

Here are a few mental tennis tips for beginning players and advanced players:

The first of the mental tennis tips is this: Be versatile; multiple playing styles provide more strategic options. Without these options, you also have a shortage of mental safety valves. Psychological health is strengthed — on the tennis court and in general — when you have multiple courses of action from which to choose. Options are mentally empowering; a lack of options creates mental despair. As long as you have another playing style to revert to when one isn’t working, you won’t give up. So learn varied play; ideally, learn every kind of shot with every kind of spin from every region of the court. This is among the most reliable of all tennis tips.

The second mental tennis tip is designed to help to increase concentration. If you’re distracted in any way — due to nerves, anger, et cetera — repeat the simple phrase “only the ball”. The repetition will assist you in blocking out negative thoughts, and the words will remind you to keep your focus where it belongs — on the ball! Try it next time you play; you’ll be amazed how mental tennis tips can improve your game. Mental toughness in tennis is in part based on your own thought patterns and mentality.

Positive Self-Talk

Talking to your self during a match, as discussed in one of the mental tennis tips above, can improve mental toughness. Try other phrases for other situations, unique to the areas in which you find yourself “choking”. For example, if you are not following through on your strokes during matches, you might say to yourself “Don’t stop. Follow through”. Experiment with phrases until you’ve discovered ones that work for you in overpowering your negative subconscious inner voice, which is controlling your mind, and your play. Try these mental tennis tips — these mental tennis tips work!

Staying in the Moment

Here is another one of the mental tennis tips that can improve your concentration and consistency. Often, particularly during a significant match, we dwell on the errors we make, the points we miss. We focus on what we’re doing wrong in a match and end up frustrating ourselves even more. We, in essence, mentally beat ourselves up until our concentration falters, and we are no longer functioning to our ability. But with a minimum of 120 points per match, why worry about each one missed? Mental tennis tips advocate that you focus on the present instead — you must play in the moment in order to succeed!

You can’t change previous shots, so forget about them, and play one point at a time. This means also not planning ahead — just stay in the moment! Your next shot is all you can control, so that should be your sole focus. Keep this and other mental tennis tips in mind every time you step on the court.

Improve Your Body Language

Many mental tennis tips involve the strategic use of body language. Know that the way you use body language can directly affect your opponent’s mental state and the outcome of the match. Practice these mental tennis tips — avoid negative body language! Negative body language likely occurs when you’re losing. You may drop your shoulders, shake your head, and demonstrate frustration in other manner (perhaps even cursing). Your opponent sees that you are losing control. This realization increases his or her energy levels; and in all likelihood he or she begins playing even better than before witnessing the negative body language. Your chances of moving into the lead decrease. But by simply avoiding negative body language, you can prevent your opponent from this advantage. Mental tennis tips involving strategic use of body language are among the most important.

Mental toughness for tennis is an important ingredient to have for every tennis player that wants to achieve success. Following up on the last of the mental tennis tips, here are mental tennis tips involving positive body language. Most players exhibit positive body language when winning a game: grinning, shoulders up, head held high — even the occasional fist pump. Why not display some of this positive body language when losing? Force yourself to follow these mental tennis tips. You’ll intimidate your opponent. And you’ll also invigorate your own game; by displaying body language that indicates you’re winning, your body will act as if it’s winning, full of adrenaline and increased focus. So think about your body language and these mental tennis tips next time you’re in a match; exhibit positive body language and avoid negative body language, and you’ll be at a great advantage! As with all mental tennis tips, the primary message here is “Don’t be afraid”! Be confident — or at least, look like you are.

Establish a Rhythm for Mental Toughness

Here’s another of the most useful mental tennis tips. Establish the rhythm of the game with key words. For instance, when your opponent tosses the ball, say “ball”; when he or she hits the ball, say “Hit”; when the ball bounces, say “bounce”. You’re formalizing the rhythm of the game with words, keeping the beat so to speak — and, this can help greatly with your concentration and consistency. Or, try these mental tennis tips: count each time your opponent hits the ball, which can also increase concentration and consistency. Experiment with these mental tennis tips until you find what works for you.

Many great mental tennis tips also involve “visualization into reality” or “positive visualization”. For instance, if you are standing on the baseline about to serve, imagine the following as you bounce the ball in front of you. You smoothly hit your very best serve — it travels down the middle of the deuce court; your opponent is jammed. Continue to visualize yourself elegantly running the path of your serve.

Your opponent hits a return. You are on-balance, ready to return the ball. Such positive visualization has been proven to increase achievement. (Negative visualization, also known as self-doubt, has been proven to do the opposite.) If you go to the baseline to serve with a negative thought in your head, take a moment and step back, then refocus with positive visualization. Begin your serving ritual again, now with a better mindset. Use these mental tennis tips — visualizations — continuously as you play; you’ll see the results these mental tennis tips bring.

Also, try these mental tennis tips at night, right before falling asleep. Visualize yourself hitting blistering groundstrokes, crushing overheads, and angle volleys. Visualize yourself serving exactly the way you wish to serve. Visualize your perfect match. Then go to sleep. You may find this positive visualization advances your game to a greater degree than any of the other mental tennis tips.

Never Give-Up Mentality

And finally, perhaps the most important in mental toughness for tennis: never give up! Adversity will occur in just about every tennis match you play. Choosing mental tennis tips to confront said adversity may result in success; not choosing mental tips to confront said adversity will likely result in failure. And the best act of mental toughness for tennis is to never surrender, never retreat — that is, keep playing with a winning, positive attitude, point by point, until the last point has been played. Don’t let negative thoughts of defeat cloud your judgment and affect your play.

And, to continue the mental tennis tips above, with your “never give up” attitude intact, consider how your opponent is winning, what is his or her strategy — and, then alter your game to respond. For instance, if he or she is winning from the baseline, try sending him or her a few short angled slice shots perhaps near the service lines. This may change the game entirely by taking your opponent out of his or her comfort zone. Again, the most important lesson of all within the mental tennis tips is to never give up!

Mental tennis is often the difference in winning a tennis match for players of two equals.

While technique, strokes and tennis strategies are an essential part of the game, mental tennis is often the hardest battle inside the human mind. Mental tennis is mostly a battle of our own mind, and players have the choice to condition the mind properly to enhance their technical and physical skills on court when it comes to match play.

Mental Tennis Foundation

In tennis, the players must possess skill, size, strength, agility and speed. All these tennis skills will help the player gain an edge in a tennis match. But if supposing, he is mentally weak, then he may lose against a player who has a stronger mental tennis game. A player, whether on an amateur tennis court, or a professional tennis venue, can develop mental tennis to win games.

It requires the correct mental training to enable our mind’s to respond more favorably to pressure match situations and the host of other inhibitors that inevitably occur during a competitive tennis match. The player that prevails mentally, often has a distinct advantage over his or her opponent even before the real match has begun.

Pete Sampras: An example of ultimate mental tennis toughness with a Calm, Confident and Cool Persona

The human mind is a complex organ that was designed to react to different stimuli. Our own thought patterns are feedback that goes inside the brain, which is said to be the most advanced computer ever made.

The challenge is to master the various factors that effect the mind which prevent players from reaching their full potential on the tennis court.

Developing Mental Tennis Toughness

How many times have we seen players with flawless tennis strokes lose the mental tennis game to another player with less than desirable strokes?

The likely reason was that the player with flawless tennis strokes lost the mental tennis game to their opponent, often with less than perfect stroke production.

Thus the reason for developing mental tennis toughness is a crucial component is becoming a winner on the tennis court. Brilliant tennis technique, strategy and peak tennis fitness are only half of the equation needed to be a successful tennis player. The other part is execution under pressure, and this comes down to mental tennis toughness.

What type of mental tennis competitor do you have to be in order to compete at the highest levels of the game?

At the professional level, players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova are seen to have unbreakable mental tennis toughness. In situations where they are down in a match, or having a bad day, they are sometimes able to pull through the match with a win. They have simply learned to turn a losing situation into a positive outcome.

Surely, mental tennis is at work here throughout their matches. If at one second, one of these pro players gave up the battle inside their mind, the match would have been lost the moment their opponent came up ahead in the set.

Adapting to Adversity

Tennis is a game of adversity, every part of the game involves difficult challenges every step of the way. During a competitive tennis match, adversity is an unavoidable condition. The adversity can come from the opponent, the spectators, the weather, and even your mind.

The pros have learned to deal with adversity by developing a stronger mental tennis foundation. In every great endeavor in life, adversity finds it way into the situation. Adversity is a test of a player’s mental tennis toughness, so a player must choose to strengthen their mind to deal with uncomfortable situations.

Stepping out of your comfort zone

Mental tennis training for that matter is a question if whether a player is willing to step out of his or her comfort zone. In every tennis match, the player that dictates the shot selection usually controls the match and ultimately becomes the winner.

A part of stepping out of your comfort zone applies to tennis training, the intensity of your practice and the boundaries that you are willing to surpass in your goals.

Mental Tennis Training

Mental tennis is a second battle within the mind that must be properly trained and conditioned.

It starts with examining the factors of the match and by observing one’s own thought patterns. A basic rule in psychology is our thought patterns and what we see of ourselves tends to become our reality.

So, if players are negative going into a match, they have likely already lost the mental tennis battle even before the initial warm up.

The key is to develop positive thought patterns and eliminate the negativity inside the mind. All of that clutter and chatter that disrupts our momentum and deters our physical body from executing shots correctly during a match.

There are many different tips like the physical, technical, tactical and mental skills. In order to develop mental tennis toughness, players must learn the correct winning mentality, how to control their emotions and how to approach the game with a positive attitude and focus on the task at hand.

Mental Tennis Approach

Usually among mental tennis solutions will be to help the player make small adjustments in his or her approach to the stroke, game, tactical play or anything else, that eventually results in a different outcome. Mental tennis can be applied to technique, tactics, and tennis fitness and of course, the mental part of a player.

The player has to explore the various categories and discover how a calculated mental tennis approach can greatly influence his or her approach towards the stroke, the perception of the situation as well as the mental approach to the game.

The player who is an outstanding athlete may reach the acme of professional tennis perfection not by shortcuts but by just employing a daily regimen of mental preparation. It will prepare them for a close tennis matches, it will enhance his tennis strokes and it will give him an edge over his superior opponents with his power of mind. Moreover Psychological tips are also found to be an indispensable in their rise to fame. Mental tennis tips are therefore seen to be a crucial in a player’s development in the game.

In discussing the mental game of tennis, what are the factors that separate great competitors from average players?

What are the characteristics of a winning tennis player and how can tennis players at all levels learn from our professional tennis champions?

The game of tennis is as much mental as it is physical. Some would argue that the former actually takes precedence over the latter. In the higher levels of the sport, this is certainly true. When you have reached a competitive level, you are measuring yourself up against other players who have similarly done what you have done.

They’ve also trained and practiced all their strokes and they’ve worked on their physical fitness. Now, out on the court, it must be decided who is the better player. Sometimes, there is a clear physical edge. But more frequently, the edge is mental. Why else would it be so common for a 40 year old weekend player to beat a teenager who hits harder and runs faster? It is because a lot of times, the older guy is more experienced, disciplined, calm and focused.

Focus and Concentration in the Mental Game of Tennis

Focus and concentration are two terms that are often used interchangeably when talking about the mental game of tennis. Developing your ability to focus requires great self-discipline, which is evident in one’s general approach to the game. From discipline, a player cultivates awareness about what’s important and what’s not.

Before a match, a player should be aware of a lot of things including first and foremost, himself. This self-awareness is based upon the knowledge of his or her ability and skill level, strengths and weaknesses, physical condition and how he or she is feeling at that point in time. Specific things like little injuries, fatigue and illnesses are taken into account and assessed properly.

Mental Game of Tennis Starting With The Off Court Preparation

Obviously, one should not even go out and play if these are too bad or can potentially worsen. If you are able to play despite feeling a little less than 100%, then you should assess what steps you can take in order to increase your chance of winning. For example, if you are feeling a little fatigued then you should pay more attention to what you eat before playing, making sure that you consume the right energy-providing food. Then, once you get to the court, you should warm up properly so you can get into more of a groove when the actual match starts.

Mental Game of Tennis: The Planning Element

You can also plan to play more aggressively in order to keep the points shorter. You should also be prepared with what you bring on court. If you have blisters on your hands, bring band aids. If you are feeling a little sore here and there, bring the appropriate support strap. The food and drinks you bring should also be of the right kind. If the weather is really hot, for instance, bring more water and sports drinks than usual. You should have also hydrated yourself properly before the match.

The mental game of tennis is also evident when you consider your pre-match planning and strategizing. Within this, you take stock of your strokes and compare it to your opponent’s. You shouldfigure out what you do well and what you don’t side by side with those of your opponent’s.

When you have considered this, you should try to devise a strategy to maximize your strengths and minimize exposure of your weaknesses while trying to do the opposite with your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.

Mental Game of Tennis: Setting a Strategy for Playing Your Opponent

Corollary to this, the strategy that you work out should put you in a position on the court where you are in control of the rallies. For example, if both you and your opponent have strong forehands but mediocre backhands, then you can choose to play chiefly to your opponent’s backhand and run around your own backhand whenever possible.

Your opponent will try to do the same, so the match will come down to execution. If you have developed your mental game, you will stand a better chance of executing this strategy better as the match unfolds, especially when the so-called ‘important’ stages of the match comes.

Executing a strategy successfully hinges on your ability to play tactical shots. These are shots that win the point outright, set you up to finish the point or draw an error because it is the type of shot that your opponent hates. Going back to the example above, let’s say that aside from both of you having forehands stronger than backhands, you also are more comfortable hitting flat and slice shots while your opponent is more of a topspin player.

Improving Your Mental Game of Tennis Through Decision Making

Topspin increases the margin of error so you don’t want to be involved in long rallies because chances are, he will outlast you in those types of points. So you should be aggressive, take the ball on the rise and hit it flat and hard to his backhand as much as possible.

When you are given the ball on your own backhand, slice it back but be sure to keep it low. Let’s also say hypothetically that your opponent likes to stay at the baseline and can run side to side all day while you are slightly better at coming to the net.

You cannot just come to the net on any ball because he is fast and his topspin will make the ball dip down low as you try to close in, giving you a difficult volley. So what you should do is to hit short and low slices that force him off the baseline and try to hit shots moving diagonally. If you find that he is uncomfortable doing this, you can take advantage by coming to the net to knock away easy volleys or watch his attempted passing shots go awry. Notice how much the mental game of tennis dictates the physical and technical aspects.

Using Smart Tennis Tactics in The Mental Game of Tennis

If awareness is vital to preparing properly for a match, it is equally crucial once the match starts and as it progresses. Let’s go back once again to the hypothetical match up mentioned above. If your opponent is somehow hitting his backhand well that day, you have to find a way to break it down. As the weaker side, it is still the side you should prefer to attack. However, you should change your way of attacking it.

If he is getting into a groove hitting back your hard, flat shots, you can change it up by hitting high topspin shots to that side. Do not hit exclusively with topspin because, remember, that is what he prefers. You are only doing this to give him a different look from time to time. You can also try hitting wide to the forehand first before hitting an angle to the side T forcing him to hit backhands on the run.

This will put pressure on that wing and increase the likelihood that it will break down eventually. This ability to solve problems and adapt an alternative strategy requires mental flexibility which is just as important as physical flexibility.

Developing Mental Toughness for Tennis

For most people, the mental game of tennis is mainly about a player’s mental toughness. This certainly is one of the most admirable qualities that all the great champions have. Some have this innately more than others. But it can also be learned, practiced and improved. Ideally, learning about this should start at the beginning of a player’s development.

In actuality, mental toughness encompasses self-discipline and awareness and therefore extends from the pre-match preparation to the post match analysis. But in terms of tennis as competition per se, mental toughness is about how a player is able to concentrate throughout a match so that he or she plays at the highest possible level especially during the important stages.

Mental Game of Tennis: Blocking Out Distractions

To truly be effective mentally, a player has to know what to focus on and what to ignore. This selective attention is crucial because there are a lot of distractions on the court. The crowd, the adjacent courts and the conditions like the wind, sun (or lights if at night time), heat, rain, humidity and altitude all play a part in the way a match is played. If someone in the crowd shouts during a point or if a ball from the adjacent court rolls over to your court, you have to be able to deal with the distraction of having to play a let.

Dealing with Uncontrollable Factors

At the same time, these things are out of anyone’s control so a player must try not to let these things bother him. Dealing with the conditions is also a major part of the mental game of tennis. No one has control over nature so one must just be able to adapt to the conditions properly. For example, if you are serving into the sun, then it is important for you to get your first serve in because your opponent might be thinking that this is his opportunity to break.

The most mentally tough players all have rituals that help them forget about the last point and get back in focus for the next point. Forgetting about the last point is imperative especially after you have committed an error or a tactical misjudgement that leads to an easy winner for your opponent.

Mental Game of Tennis through Rituals

Common rituals include straightening the strings, taking practice swings, jogging in place and bouncing the ball a certain number of times before serving. What you do in between points is also useful for controlling the pace of a match.

If you are playing well, you might want to speed things up a bit to keep yourself going while if you are starting to lose a bit of your form, you should slow things down to calm down. But don’t take too much time because it becomes unfair to your opponent.

Conversely, trying to quick serve an opponent also doesn’t keep with the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play. The changes in the length of time between points should be as small as possible. Try to keep your time in between points at a consistent and reasonable length.

Mental Game of Tennis: Accepting Your Mistakes

Learning to control your emotions and keep a positive attitude is another essential skill in the mental game of tennis. Unforced errors are part of the game and this must be accepted by all players. This is something that can be learned at an early stage of a player’s development. The sport of tennis is not the easiest thing to learn. Inevitably, there will be more errors in the beginning.

It is at this time that a player should be taught to accept these mistakes and simply try to learn from them. If he or she displays any petulant behavior toward committing mistakes, this behavior should be corrected as soon as possible. Keeping calm and being patient with one’s progress will better equip a player to keep thinking positively and concentrate better in competitive situations.

Mental Game of Tennis: Developing a Positive Attitude

The last and probably most important aspect of the mental game of tennis is the development of a player’s attitude towards winning and losing. As a competitive sport, it is always required that a player try his or her very best in order to win. But doing so should always keep with the spirit of fair play.

It is one thing to make an honest mistake with a line call and quite another if you actively cheat an opponent. Above all, there should be respect for your opponent, and indeed even the officials.

Without respect, it will be very difficult to deal with losing and winning will not feel as fulfilling as it should.

Understanding That Losing and Winning is Part of Life and the Mental Game

In tennis, at the end of the day, you are only either a winner or a loser. It would be perfect if we could all just be winners all the time but that is impossible. Losing is as much a part of the game as winning. But in the mental game of tennis, you can find comfort in the fact that whatever happens, you can learn a lot from every match.

It helps to remember the famous line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” inscribed above the entrance to Wimbledon’s Centre Court: “If you can meet with triumph and disaster/And treat those two impostors just the same.” Apparently, as long as you learn and improve from every match, you’re going to be a winner every time!

The Inner game of tennis was first introduced by Timothy Gallawey in 1974 through his published book entitled “The Inner Game of Tennis”. His second book (Inner Tennis-Playing the Game) was published in 1976 which became popular not only to tennis players but athletes in different sports.

In his books, the author explained expertly the important role of the human mind in the game of tennis. He explains that through proper mind conditioning, learning and playing tennis can be very easy. He also explains how the human mind can become the greatest hindrance in reaching a player’s highest potential in a tennis game.

The Mental Tennis Game

The most important aspect to consider is to realize the power of the mind to affect someone’s performance. Once a person comes to this point, he can be considered as a winner in the inner game of tennis. A winner in the inner game of tennis means that a person knows what aspects he needs to work on, and most importantly he has the idea on how to do it.

He also emphasizes that mistakes and errors comes first to the human mind before the physical body executes it. Thus, his goal is to free everybody’s mind and win the game. Some of the negative things that the mind should avoid are: fear or apprehension, no self-confidence, self-destruction, lack of focus or lack of concentration, putting too much effort, frustration, very high expectations, anger, boredom and many others.

Self 1 and Self 2

Unknowingly, humans don’t realize that their minds work in two ways. As you try to concentrate and listen to yourself; you’ll hear two voices constantly. The first voice commands and criticizes while the second voice is the silent doer. We call these two voices as Self 1 and Self 2 as the loud and the silent voices respectively.

These two voices normally don’t agree with each other. Self 1 commands Self 2 of the things to do. Self 1 has the knowledge of what tennis is all about. It is the one that knows when to bend your knees, when to extend your arm, when to hit the ball and so on. Self 2 on the other hand, is the one that does the job (your physical body).

Trust the physical capabilities of your body

To trust your body is the first principle of the inner game of tennis. Tennis is a complicated sport and the human body (Self 2) is amazingly designed to adapt and even in the absence of our mind’s interference. Without the interference of Self 1, Self 2 can faultlessly execute any tennis technique that is even hard to grasp by the human mind. That’s because what Self 2 can do without the meddling of Self 1 is far from normal expectations.

The first skill a tennis player should have to be able to play the inner game of tennis is for him to trust his body and let it perform. The tennis player should slowly but surely trust the inherent physical capacity of his body to acquire skills and perform them. This skill is not easy to attain but an early start can make a big difference.

Key to the Inner Game of Tennis: Silence your mind

To quiet your mind is the second principle in the inner game of tennis. Tennis is such a fast game that you have very little time to think during a point. However, you have to remember that the physical capacity of your body to execute to your highest potential depends on how calm your mind is. If your mind is chaotic, troubled or distracted it creates destructions to the physical movement of your body.

To be able to win the inner game of tennis, your mind should be focused. The mind’ role is to pay attention to the essential movements during a tennis match. If your mind starts to dictate your body other than the essential things, you performance will be badly affected.

The ideal situation in the inner game of tennis is when Self 1 is focused on the game and Self 2 is at its highest performance potential. This is the time that you have the capacity to control your mind and use it as a weapon when you need it.

One of the biggest hindrances for a human to learn new things is because of Self 1’s inhibitions. Once Self 1 says “No I can’t do it” it prevents us to see, feel and experience the events or things around us. Self 1 has the tendency to overshadow our awareness and it makes us see or feel fear and uncertainty.

The main objective of the inner game of tennis is to be aware of what is going on. The goal is to change things into a positive note, but remember the idea is not to change the inner game but be aware of it. Furthermore, once you know it exists, keep increasing your awareness about it as time goes by.

Don’t be judgmental

This third concept of the tennis inner game means you must control your judgment. You should not judge your actions as bad or good. That’s because, the more we analyze them, the harder they get. Like for instance, if you say that you hit the ball in a bad manner, that’s why you lose a point.

You should try your best to improve your shot. And when you say that your shot was good because you won a point, you try to maintain that good shot. This is the balance that you need to attain the tennis inner game. Balance means to let your mind or Self1 be silent but let your body or Self 2 find the solutions on how to obtain balance.

To control your mind and your emotions not to be negative in the end is the best way to improve your tennis. In addition, your capacity to go with the flow and allowing your physical body to do the job is one of the quickest ways to improvement.
