<p>a) While the server is getting set, focus on something that does not distract you from the task at hand, such as your strings or your rocking back and forth to maintain your balance.</p>
<p>b) As the ball is tossed, try to watch it out of the server’s hand and say to yourself, &#8220;baaaallll.&#8221; Again, you are placing your focus on where it needs to be&#8211;the ball!</p>
<p>c) you might want to continue your monologue with &#8220;hit&#8221; as the ball is struck and &#8220;bounce&#8221; when the ball bounces on your side, then &#8220;hit&#8221; when you return it. Another couple of ideas that can help with single-mindedness on the <a href="https://tennisinstruction.com/tennis-serve-return/">return of serve</a> are to tell yourself how important the point is and think through a couple of options for your return.</p>
<p>Do not think of 10 options, though, because by the time you are done weighing them all, the ball will be past you. Say to yourself, &#8220;Let’s try to put this one deep to the backhand,&#8221; then try to execute that shot in a slow, controlled motion.</p>

<p>A great tennis athlete trains not only for the fitness element, but they focus on the intangibles such as the mental game, tennis nutrition, technical strokes development and much more.</p>
<p>Whether you play competitively or just for exercise, the game of tennis is always a lot more enjoyable if you are able to play it well. Improving as a tennis player encompasses many aspects of the game that all need to be developed together in order for you to become the best tennis player you can possibly be.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tips: The Mental Game</h2>
<p>Every sport has a physical and a mental side. Tennis, being the individual sport that it is, requires equal attention to both parts. There are no teammates to help you out when you’re physically or mentally tired. Therefore, the first and foremost tennis training tip would be to develop both your physical ability on court and your general psychological approach to the game.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tips: The Tennis Fitness</h2>

<p>The correct techniques and execution of the various shots is the foundation on which any tennis player must build upon the rest of his or her game.</p>
<p>There is simply no other way to perfect these strokes other than to spend time out on the practice court. Former world number one Monica Seles was known to practice a particular shot for a whole week (for example, a backhand down the line) in order to perfect it before going on to another shot. Although each shot is different, there are some common guidelines:</p>

<li>(1) watch the ball;</li>
<li>(2) prepare early;</li>
<li>(3) hit the ball at the right comfortable distance in front of your body;</li>
<li>(4) follow through; and</li>
<li>(5) maintain balance throughout.</li>

<p>Arriving at the ball with good balance requires that you have taken the right steps with your feet in order to get there.</p>
<p>Tennis training tip number three would be: improve your footwork. This is done by incorporating footwork drills along with your practice sessions. The best footwork drills should emphasize three things: (1) lateral movement; (2) forward and backward movement; and (3) the ability to recover back to the ready position.</p>
<p>Technical development is the most fundamental thing towards becoming a tennis player. But any person cannot just go participating in any sport or physical activity without being physically fit to begin with.</p>
<p>In fact, everybody should consult a physician first before starting an exercise program or new physical activity such as tennis. A doctor will evaluate his or her overall capacity for activity and exercise prior to actual participation in a fitness program or a sport like tennis. Fitness for tennis requires a combination of strength, stamina and speed.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #1: Tennis Fitness Strength Training</h2>

Strength training in tennis is unique because it emphasizes not just muscle power. There has to be strength throughout the entire range of motion.</p>
<p>Therefore, flexibility and proper stretching is required along with strength training. Also, tennis is a sport that utilizes some muscle groups more than others.</p>
<p>These muscle groups have to be worked out and kept elastic at the same time to prevent injuries and make stroke production more smooth and efficient.</p>
<p>These areas include the wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder, abdominals, hips, legs and calves. However, concentrating on just these muscle groups will lead to an overall imbalance in physical strength. This could lead to deterioration in posture and balance. Therefore, a strength training program must keep all the major muscle groups in condition, not just in terms of strength but also flexibility.</p>
<p>For example, a right handed player might work out on his right arm and shoulder more than on his left side, thinking that there is no benefit in exercising the non-dominant side. But working only on the right side will cause an imbalance in strength which results in uneven posture and possible deterioration of critical parts of the musculoskeletal system like the spine, which would then lead to a host of other health problems including derangements in neurological and circulatory function. The back is also a frequently neglected area for tennis players.</p>
<p>A strong back will help in protecting the spine which is constantly subject to twisting and bending.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #2: Training for Stamina</h2>

<p> To win a tennis match, sometimes you just need to outlast your opponent. This is especially true for players who are of very similar ability and skill level. Stamina becomes a critical factor. The next tennis training tip then is: improve endurance.</p>
<p>The most basic way to work on this is to increase aerobic resistance by doing activities like long distance running or swimming.</p>
<p>However, endurance in tennis is vastly different from other aerobic sports like running, cycling or cross country skiing.</p>
<p>Tennis actually emphasizes anaerobic resistance because it is a sport where there are short bursts of physical exertion followed by periods of rest. Furthermore, each point in tennis can be entirely different from the next point.</p>
<p>There could be a 3-stroke rally followed by a 10 stroke rally where you run all over the court and a 50 stroke rally where you are mostly hitting steadily from a particular position. You have to be prepared for different kinds of points.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #3: Training for Agility</h2>
<p>The ability to run down every ball, recover for the next shot and the quickness in getting to a strong attacking position on court all depend on the development of speed and agility. Speed is defined by how fast a player can move from one place to another. Agility is how quickly he or she can change directions or speeds. The fifth tennis training tip is to improve these two fitness components.</p>
<p>Speed can be increased through running sprints. Agility is best improved with shuttle runs and footwork drills. It is also advisable to engage in sets of exercises or drills that develop both of these components. Additionally, exercises for speed and agility can and should be done in sets in order to improve stamina as well.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #4: Proper Tennis Diet</h2>

This should be tailored to suit a player’s specific metabolic and physiological profile.</p>
<p>Proper nutrition in tennis consists of a combination of high quality protein and complex carbohydrates. These are the core materials for developing strength and the proper fuels for endurance, respectively.</p>
<p>During a long match, players need to replenish energy, keep well hydrated as well as replace lost electrolytes. Energy bars, water, sports drinks and fruits like bananas are recommended. More importantly, a good tennis diet should consist of food that satisfies the individual palate as well. It is not advisable to totally cut out sweets, treats and junk food.</p>
<p>Rather, these should be taken in moderation or in limited portions only. All healthy food is good food for tennis. Needless to say, the daily requirements for essential vitamins and minerals should be met.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #5: Improve Mental Tennis Toughness</h2>

<p>Usually, people do not associate this with exercise and training because they think that it is not something that can be developed through drills and work out routines. In the literal sense they are correct.</p>
<p>Working out in the gym and doing footwork drills aren’t going to directly influence your mental toughness. But there are also exercises and drills for the mind, and they can be incorporated into your practice sessions.</p>
<p>A good way to approach this is to treat practice matches just like you would an actual match. You should practice focusing, staying in the moment, blocking out distractions and thinking about what you need to do.</p>
<p>Also, work on shots that you would actually use in a match in order to develop your confidence. Concentration can be developed by playing games like first-to-eleven points and the ability to handle pressure can be increased by playing tie-breakers.</p>
<h2>Tennis Training Tip #6: Strategy and Tactics</h2>
<p>The last tip is also about the mental aspect of the game: strategy and tactics. If you have sufficiently developed your game, you will know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Before a match, you should know who your opponent is and how he or she plays.</p>
<p>Take into account your own game and devise a plan that can make the most of your strengths and minimize exposure of your weaknesses while at the same time attacking your opponent’s weaknesses and limiting the effect of his or her strength. This is the time to think about depth, placement, direction, spin, pace, angle and court position.</p>
<p>These all sound like a lot of hard work but they are things that have been proven time and again at all levels of the game. It is all well worth the effort if you want to enjoy the sweetest reward of playing the game better and winning more.</p>

<p>Practice with an objective; work on a specific technique (more power on your forehand, sharper volleys, variety on your serve, etc.) until mastered, then work on another. <p>This may mean that slight adjustments have to be made to progress to the next level. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The preparation for a tennis match begins way before a person walks on the court. These tennis tips to win a tennis match are for tennis players that want better results on the tennis court.</p>
<h2>Tennis playing tip #1 – Early preparation</h2>
<p>Early preparation in tennis does not just apply to tennis technique and strokes. It also applies in the preparation for a tennis match. This tennis playing tip is essential for success. Brad Gilbert, in his book Winning Ugly says that, “The preparation should begin two weeks before the start of the match.” When I first read that line, I was taken aback because nobody I knew began their preparation that early. Brad Gilbert went on to say that the tennis tips to win a tennis match was the same ones he instructed Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to do at the professional level. Of course, nobody can question Gilbert’s tennis playing tips because of his long track record of success with top professional players.</p>
<p>When I looked at myself and my own preparation, there was no way I was preparing two weeks prior to my tennis match. In reality, I began my true tennis match preparation minutes before the tennis match. Frequently, I would walk on court for a tennis match and just several minutes before the start of the tournament.</p>
<p>I was always rushed for time and I never got into a good warm up for a tennis match. As soon as I arrived to the tennis tournament site, I would have to hurry on to start the tennis match with no time to spare. Reading Brad Gilbert’s book on tennis playing tips opened my eyes as to why my tournament results were sporadic – especially when I had little time to prepare for a tennis match.</p>
<p>If I were to teach tennis players the best tennis playing tips, I would advise them to listen to Brad Gilbert’s advice and his tennis tips on winning a match.</p>
<h2>Tennis playing tip #2 Calm your Emotions</t2></p>
<p>So you’ve realized that the best tennis tip for winning a tennis match is something entirely inside the bounds of your control. It’s simply early preparation. Starting the mental, physical and emotional preparation earlier on at least the day before the tennis match. On the tennis match day, likely there will be a lot of different emotions inside your mind. Your mind might be fluttering with different thoughts.</p>
<p>Many of these thoughts will be about the past or future. Your head may be foggy and unclear at the match day, either worrying about past thoughts or nervous about your future performance during the tennis match that day. It’s important to learn to calm your emotions. You may be feeling nervous, your stomach jittery and your muscles tensed. All of these emotions and feelings can easily become out of control and take over during a tennis match if they are not properly maintained.</p>
<p>For this tennis playing tips, I advise you to develop what I call “emotional detachment.” In order to win a tennis match, a person should be relatively focused and clear of overwhelming thoughts.</p>
<h2>Tennis Playing tip #3 Reduce the “Fight or Flight” Syndrome </h2>
<p>This tennis playing tip is important for every tennis player competing at the tournament level. Being nervous and anxious is entirely natural. It is the body’s “flight or fight” syndrome kicking into gear. As primitive animals, humans were designed to protect themselves from danger by developing this attribute. As soon as danger is sensed, the human body would become extra aroused. The heartbeats may become rapid, palms sweaty, muscles tighten up and become tensed and the mind becomes foggy. The most primitive stages of a human being are then introduced, but these symptoms are not ideal for a competitive tennis match situation.</p>
<p>Humans have evolved since then, but the same “flight or fight” from what is perceived as fear or danger is still inside our nature. This can be detrimental a tennis match. In a tennis match, the body performs best in the zone – with little to no tension and anxiety.</p>

<p>Watch Roger Federer play a tennis match. Even though Federer’s reputation and money is at stake every time he plays a grand slam he looks cool, calm and collected. His tennis technique and strokes are hit with full comfort and his appearance is relaxed. This is the same characteristics that tennis players at all levels should strive to develop.</p>
<h2>Tennis Playing tip #4 Develop a ritual</h2>
<p>Developing a ritual prior and during a tennis match is a crucial tennis playing tip. A ritual can be anything that serves to relax a person and take their mind off of the tennis match. A ritual should be performed on a consistent basis so the mind and body begins to associate the ritual with a positive and calming aspect.</p>
<p>Rituals can be anything from verbal cues, mental visualizations, thoughts or actions that pertain to the tennis match and will make the person increase their focus and concentration. Tennis is a game that requires a large amount of mental and physical concentration, any break in concentration can cause the person to lose games, sets and then matches.</p>

Many players, especially beginners are confused which is the best stance to use, the open stance or the neutral stance. There is no definite answer to this question, since both stances have their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of shot you execute. The open stance, for example is the best strategy on baseline rallies. On one hand, when you are hitting an approach shot and you have a great chance to play net, then a neutral stance (where the feet is more closed) is ideal. The bottom line here is whether you use an open stance, or neutral stance, the most important thing is you are in proper balance during the shot.</p>

<p>If you prefer to use the neutral stance, you have to be more accurate with your shots than when you use an open stance. This is due to the fact that players in an open stance normally swing their racket more across their body, sacrificing accuracy and depth.</p>
<p>If you want to add power in your forehand shot in a closed stance, do not turn your body completely away from the net. You have to have some allowance to allow your hip to turn when you do the shot. The best position to do this is to have your upper body positioned slightly towards the net until you reach your final preparation phase.</p>

<p>Every player should be able to hit a topspin forehand. This shot is vital to improve your tennis ground strokes. It also gives your ball a big net clearance which preventing errors.</p>
<p>However, a flat forehand shot has also its own advantages. It can increase the speed of your shots. Sometimes, a flat shot is the best shot when a very good opportunity comes to hit the ball away from your opponent. Be very careful though, because with flat shot, margin of errors are very high. It is very easy to hit into net or to hit wide (outside the lines) balls with a flat forehand.</p>
<h3>How to produce a powerful forehand shot?</h3>
<p>A powerful tennis forehand groundstroke is primarily produced as the result of your upper body rotation. This is true especially with beginner players. However with advanced or professional players, they have an alternative technique to add power to their forehand shots. They do it by laying their wrist back and moving the forearm forward to add extra leverage during their swing.</p>

This shot is generally used by players in baseline rallies or when a player wants to execute an approach shot. There are two main techniques in the tennis backhand, the two handed tennis backhand and the one handed tennis backhand. The decision as to what technique to use depends on the types of shots the player wants to execute as well as each player’s preferences.</p>
<p>Most tennis players leave the backhand shot in the back burner, and most tennis beginners are taught the tennis backhand after they have learned the forehand, the tennis backhand is usually the weaker shot.</p>
<h2>Tips for a powerful tennis backhand</h2>
<p>These tennis backhand tips will give you some ideas on how to hit a powerful backhand. The best technique to hit a backhand is to hold your racket in such a way that the face of your racket is not open during the point of contact with the ball. To accomplish this, you have to hold the racket in such a way that your palm is holding the top part of the racket handle. Too often, I find that tennis players resolve in hitting their tennis backhand as if it were a shot designated only for pushing the ball back somewhere on the court. This mentality will do nothing to improve the tennis backhand, and chances of playing better tennis this way is slim. To progress to higher levels, one must utilize the backhand shot just as much as one would for a tennis forehand.</p>

<p>As a competitive tennis player, I was also guilty of using all arm on the tennis backhand. I fell into the classic trap of using all arm and making a last minute flick of the wrist to generate topspin to keep it in the court. It was a bad habit that kept my tennis backhand from being as powerful as I wanted it to be. It&#8217;s a habit that sticks with a person and is hard to escape from, just like the plague. It&#8217;s best to get started on the right path right away to avoid bad habits from lingering on the tennis backhand.</p>
<h2>Set the Correct Mindset</h2>
<p>Our final tennis backhand tip is mentality. Right away ask yourself, &#8220;Do I want my tennis backhand to be a powerful shot or a defensive shot? Chances are your current backhand may be operating around defense, and the backhand shot may not be what you want it to be. There is also a disadvantage of the two handed backhand, which is its limited reach. To solve this problem, you have to have your racket already at your back with your shoulder turned when you start running towards the ball. Avoid running to the ball first before completing the shot preparation (turning the shoulder). Coiling your body as a unit allows you to attain more efficient movement.</p>
<p>Just be reminded that both of the backhand techniques (the two handed backhand and the one handed tennis handed) have their own advantages and disadvantages. In most cases, you don’t have to choose between the two. The most important thing is to use the technique that you feel you are more comfortable with.</p>
<h2>Tennis Backhand Slice Tips</h2>
<p>Follow these tennis backhand tips for you to be able to hit a backhand slice correctly. To prepare for a backhand slice shot, bend your racket arm. This bending motion is important because the efficiency of your slice backhand depends in the magnitude of your arm extension.</p>
